Class B South- Falmouth at Marshwood

...After a disappointing 6-4 season that ended with a regional semifinal loss last fall, Marshwood is riding high again, putting a 10-game winning streak and top seed on the line Saturday in the Class B South championship against No. 3 Falmouth (8-2).

As sophomores, Glidden and Taran noticed something about the seniors on that championship team.

“Those guys played their butts off every single play,” Glidden said. “The more you see that and the more you’re part of that, the more you’re able to replicate that on the field.”

That same sense of urgency and effort wasn’t always present last fall, Glidden said, and left him determined to recapture it this year.

Falmouth fueled by trio of brothers at linebacker

Josh Allen, Coleman Allen and Shane Allen are among the Yachtsmen's top defenders entering the Class B South title game Saturday at Marshwood.

...But, Fitzsimmons said, all of that can play into his Yachtsmen’s hands: “Nobody expects you to win. It takes a level of attention off the players and you can say, ‘Let’s go surprise them.’ ”

There’s another reason not to overlook Falmouth: This team believes in itself and players believe each other. There’s a family atmosphere, highlighted by brothers who anchor three of Falmouth’s four starting linebacker positions: senior outside backer Josh Allen (a captain who also starts at center), junior inside backer Coleman Allen and sophomore inside backer Shane Allen. Coleman Allen (6-foot, 215 pounds) leads Falmouth with 91 tackles, Josh Allen (5-10, 180) is fourth at 75 and Shane Allen (5-11, 200) is sixth with 54. Their bond helps bring the team together.

“We’re family, this team, we’re all brothers,” said Coleman Allen. “We’ve been playing with each other since we were little, since Pee Wees. We all know each other very well. We’re all very good friends.”

HIDDEN GEMS: Newcomers have bolstered the top-seeded Hawks

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — It’s 1,300 miles from Crystal River, Fla., to Marshwood High School and, for senior Cam Fischer, the path to the starting lineup had some distance, too.

The top-seeded Hawks (10-0) are looking to return to the Class B title game after a year away, and to do so they’ll need to beat No. 3 Falmouth (8-2) in the regional championship here on Saturday (12:30 p.m.).

Fischer, who moved to the area with his family in June, after his father took a job at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, is the gridiron equivalent of found money. He played himself into a starting job at inside linebacker late in the season and has thrived on one of the state’s best defenses.

“I didn’t know what to think, honestly,” said Fischer, of joining the program this summer. “I was hoping the team would take me in as one of the brothers and they did. I love the team, love the coaching and love the community.”

CLASS B SOUTH FINAL: Marshwood-Falmouth a contrast in styles

...Falmouth (8-2) has a sturdy, third-year quarterback in senior Jack Bryant, but has leaned on the run game. Bryant has rushed for nearly 1,000 yards, while speedy Garret Aube and Riley Reed are also getting plenty of carries.

“They’re a little bit different team than they were the last two years,” said Marshwood coach Alex Rotsko. “We always went into the games with them saying, ‘We gotta stop pass, we gotta stop pass.’ That’s not true anymore. Good spread teams aren’t throwing the ball 40-50 times a game. Good spread teams run the ball.

″(Bryant) is not the fastest kid, but he’s a big, strong kid who’s always falling forward to get that extra 2-3 yards.”

In the Week 6 meeting between the teams, a 42-19 win by the Hawks (10-0) that was close into the fourth quarter, Falmouth ran the ball 39 times and passed just 12. That’s the only time all season it’s been held under 32 points.

Marshwood, meanwhile, has a legit throwing quarterback for the first time in Rotsko’s six-year tenure. At 6-feet, Tommy Springer has good pocket presence and a strong arm, enabling his offense to take their shots downfield.

Happy about Marshwood's win, but it can't go without saying what great team Falmouth is and what a hard fought game they played. I was sure they would score and win on that last drive, but Marshwood had one more big play left in them.

Damn, figures there was finally a great, competitive football game in Maine and I missed it. How are the State games looking for competiveness?
