BDN North Previews: Playoff season begins for championship hopefuls

The MPA invites each locally produced division champion to play in its state championship games, this year on Friday, Nov. 17, at the University of Maine in Orono (Class C) and Saturday, Nov. 18, at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland (Classes A, B and D).

In the meantime, 30 of the 36 teams from the South and 26 of the 36 teams from the North – or a total of 74 percent of the teams in the four divisions overall — remain alive for playoff competition.

Class B North
No. 5 Brewer (4-4) vs. No. 4 Messalonskee (4-4), 7 p.m. Friday
No. 6 Brunswick (1-7) vs. No. 2 Cony (5-3), 7 p.m. Friday

Class C North
No. 8 John Bapst (3-5) at No. 1 Mount Desert Island (7-1), 7 p.m. Friday:
No. 7 Waterville (3-5) at No. 2 Winslow (7-1), 1 p.m. Saturday:
No. 6 Maine Central Institute (4-4) at No. 3 Nokomis (6-2), 1 p.m. Saturday
No. 5 Oceanside (5-3) at No. 4 Hermon (6-2), 7 p.m. Friday;

Class D North
No. 5 Ellsworth-Sumner (4-4) at No. 4 Dexter-Piscataquis (4-4), 1 p.m. Saturday:

Weekend Blitz and Top 10: Playoffs have arrived, and so has a new No. 1

No. 6 Portland (2-6) at No. 3 Oxford Hills (4-4)
A North quarterfinal
Friday, 7 p.m.

Not sure how helpful the tape from the Vikings’ Week 1 20-14 win will be because both teams have become virtually unrecognizable in two months.

Head to head: Some not-so-bold playoff prediction

Randy: All right, time to put it all on the line and make some playoff predictions, Lee.

In Class A, I’ve got Bonny Eagle and Edward Little. I am not comfortable with either pick.

The Scots rolled through A South for seven weeks, then suffered a couple of key injuries and got rolled for big play after big play by Scarborough. But that will just serve to tick the Scots off, provided they get healthy.

The Red Eddies didn’t lose a game until last week, either, but they had a lot more close games than Bonny Eagle did. Class A North might be the most competitive playoff bracket, but the Eddies were the most balanced and consistent team all season. And having home field will be a big help.

Week 9 HS Football Showcase: It’s win or go home for Marshwood, York

...For top-seeded Marshwood (8-0), the biggest danger in facing No. 8 Mt. Ararat (3-5) on Friday (6 p.m.) might be looking past it to a potential semifinal with Biddeford (5-3) or Greely (5-3)

... On Saturday, sixth-seeded York (4-4) will visit No. 3 Fryeburg Academy (6-2) in the Class C South quarterfinals, a game slated to kick off at 1:30 p.m.
