Football Game of the Week: Gardiner looks to shake string of hard-luck losses vs. Fryeburg
Two hot defenses meet as Raiders travel to Hoch Field to face Tigers.

Hot defenses meet at Hoch Field

On paper, it looks like a mismatch in the making. Fryeburg Academy, off to a hot 3-1 start, traveling to face Gardiner, sitting at 1-3 and looking for a win and some momentum midway through the season.

One-sided, right? Raiders coach David Turner doesn’t think so.

“I think there are four or five teams, I would say five teams, in C South who are very, very even,” he said. “I think that they’re one of the best four or five teams in C South. We certainly are viewing this as regardless of rankings and seedings, whatever. Having seen them on film, they’re a very good football team.”

Fryeburg football pulls away from Gardiner

...“They’re a good football team,” Gardiner coach Joe White said. “We knew that coming in. You can’t make mistakes. We tried to move the ball, throwing picks and we tried to establish the run. Hats off to them they played a fantastic football game.”

Forced to the air, Gardiner quarterback Cole Heaberlin had little time to throw. He completed 7 of 12 passes for 49 yards and threw two interceptions, both to junior Nathan Knapp. He was also sacked twice.

“We were just throwing a lot at them,” said Gullikson, who also plays linebacker. “When they were going with that empty (set) we blitzed two backers. We were getting pressure and our front three were doing a great job getting pressure too.”
