Mariners tackle gritty, competitive homecoming win over Raiders
Norton finishes with 217 yards, 3 TDs, Ripley 115 yards, TD, Yates 79 yards to aid comeback victory

ROCKLAND — There were many pivotal moments in Friday night's Oceanside homecoming football game with Oak Hill of Sabattus, but none more important than a late second-half defensive stand and subsequent tough-minded, hard-nosed scoring drive to put the game on ice.

In front of hundreds of fans, a large, vocal student section and plenty of Mariner alumni, Oceanside pulled out a thrilling 28-20 comeback victory over the Raiders on Sept. 22 at Wasgatt Field.

A link to more photos from this game will appear later with this story.

Watch video below.

The Mariners, who had started the campaign with a home victory followed by two tough, competitive road losses, led 21-20 deep into the second half, but the Raiders drove to the shadow of the Oceanside goal line and appeared set to punch the ball in for a go-ahead touchdown.

In first gridiron game between longstanding athletic rivals, Mariners carry day versus host Panthers

...“I thought the first half was great,” said Oceanside coach Wes Drinkwater. “We did a lot of things good, [but] in the second half things got a little chippy there and it was kind of sloppy.”

It is no secret that Oceanside’s most potent offensive weapon is senior running back Mike Norton Jr., but the Mariners spread the offensive wealth throughout the 48-minute affair Friday night as Ben Ripley, Michael Yates and Jacob Curtis also effectively toted the rock several times for the visitors.

Ripley and Yates found the end zone twice in the winning effort for Oceanside, while Norton added one score — the first of the game — on a 5-yard run with 7:11 left in the first quarter.

Ripley rushed for 161 yards on 16 carries, while Norton (10 carries, 100 yards), Titus Kaewthong (3 carries, 16 yards), Curtis (5 carries, 48 yards), Yates (8 carries, 51 yards) also racked up yards on the ground for the visitors.
