SJ Game of the Week: Vikings, Red Eddies hope to sort out muddled A North

...The Vikings won the Class A North quarterfinal, 26-20, in overtime to extend their season and end the Red Eddies'. For the winning touchdown, they threw their first and, as it turned out, only touchdown pass of the entire season, an eight-yard pass from Connor Truman to Ethan Bourgoin.

Both coaching staffs may be contemplating whether they can afford to hold anything back for Friday night's rematch at Walton Field. Oxford Hills and Edward Little are nearly halfway through what is clearly the most competitive season since the Portland-area teams joined the region in 2013.

The Red Eddies (3-0) are the only unbeaten team in A North, but are currently looking up at Lewiston and Windham in the Heal point standings. The Vikings (2-1) are ranked fourth. The weight of the Heals won't be fully realized until the final game is played, but both teams know the value of a victory on Friday night will likely increase significantly as the season unfolds.

This should be a back and forth game! I honestly thought OH was deeper and better than EL last year and both teams have improved this year. Who has improved more? Has EL taken such a large leap that they've surpassed OH?

OH rushed for about 630 yards in the two games last year and only threw the ball a handful of times.
EL racked up about 630 total yards in the two games last year and definitely had more balance between running and throwing.

Both teams are a little better this year. Who can limit the mistakes and penalties? That will again be the difference.

EL 7 OH 6

Kind of like the Class A North version of Scarborough-TA last week (poor man's variety!) LOL OH played the role of Scarborough...out to an early lead and a chance to put it away. Then a fumble at the 3 yard line going in...and then a 15 yard penalty...and then a shotgun snap rolling across the ground...and another...and a fumbled snap..and a holding penalty. Just ugly.

EL did a nice job of coming back and putting a game winning drive together and a beautiful pass\catch to take the lead. And then they were able to ice the game with some 3 and 4 yard carries to end the game. I don't think OH had the ball for more than a few minutes in that second half.

OH again yields very little yardage or points and just keeps shooting themselves in the foot!

Edward Little football edges Oxford Hills

...“We’ll take it,” Eddies coach Dave Sterling said. “We had a lot of guts and determination.”

In a game mostly devoid of momentum, the Vikings’ 6-0 lead seemed larger than it actually was until the end of the third quarter when the Eddies finally started moving the ball.

Senior running back Caden Begos did most of the heavy lifting, and that power running finally opened up the pass game for Hartley (3-for-15, two interceptions).

On a play action, Hartley rolled out and delivered a dime to Robinson streaking toward the back corner of the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown with 8:29 remaining in the game.

“I thought it was a good play call,” Hartley said. “The wideout, Eric Robinson, made a great rout. Perfectly executed — couldn’t have gone much better.”

Edward Little rolls on, topples Deering

...Hartley also set up Weaver’s touchdown catch by scrambling for 17 yards on fourth-and-14.

“We worked play-action really well,” Sterling said. “We had some people step up. Xzabier Weaver made some very great catches during the game. Leighton Girardin stepped up and has been playing the A position for us. Maxx Bell’s made some pretty big plays. Caden Begos continues to be our workhorse running the ball and pounding it out, and Grant Hartley’s managed our offense well. Excellent pass protection.”

The biggest play, or at least the most exciting, came on a third-quarter punt return when Bell got knocked around and at one point appeared swallowed by a swarm of defenders but somehow emerged and scored a 53-yard return.

“I just kept pumping my feet, and I saw open space and, there I was in the end zone,” Bell said. “I got hit at first and spun around and just stuck my hand in the ground and kept myself up.”
