Winthrop/Monmouth rallies past Old Orchard Beach
Ramblers get big night from quarterback Keegan Choate.

WINTHROP — In a battle of dual threat quarterbacks, Keegan Choate came out on top.

Choate passed for 168 yards, while rushing for 73 and accounted for four touchdowns (two passing, two rushing) to lead the Winthrop/Monmouth football team to a 27-18 win over Old Orchard Beach on Friday night at Maxwell Field.

Choate was aided in the ground game by running back Kane Gould, who had 64 yards rushing on 15 carries.

“We pulled through,” Winthrop/Monmouth coach Dave St. Hilaire said. “It was kind of a sloppy game but we stayed together.”

Winthrop/Monmouth back on track with win over Ellsworth/Sumner

...Giving up a fumble in the first quarter that led to an Ellsworth score, the Winthrop/Monmouth halfback could have easily taken himself out of the game mentally at that point. Instead, he scored the touchdown that helped lengthen the Ramblers lead, and a game-saving tackle that helped seal a 25-14 win Friday night at Maxwell Field.

Winthrop/Monmouth (2-3) had some momentum on its second drive. Ramblers quarterback Keegan Choate found Gaghan on a screen pass, but as he was nearly on the ground, the ball popped loose, and Ellsworth recovered. The Eagles (1-4) struck first moments later, as quarterback Connor Crawford found open space and dashed for a 67-yard score for a 6-0 lead.

Winthrop answered back in the second quarter. After a 29-yard pass from Choate to Evan Burnell to set the Ramblers up in the red zone, Choate found Dylan Lajoie on an out pattern in the end zone. Ryan Baird’s extra point gave Winthrop a 7-6 lead, which it held into halftime.

Winthrop/Monmouth:: outdistances Poland

Winthrop/Monmouth outdistances Poland

...Morgan Bellemare recorded an end zone interception that led to a Ramblers touchdown just seconds before halftime, providing the turning point in what became Winthrop/Monmouth’s 19-0 victory over Poland on Friday night.

“These last two games, we’ve really gotten it together,” said Bellemare, whose team won its second straight game to improve to 3-3.

Trailing 6-0, Poland (0-6) was looking to sneak away at halftime with the lead, marching from its 31-yard line and reaching the Winthrop/Monmouth 12 in the final minute before the break. The Ramblers rose to stuff a third-and-2 attempt, however, and on fourth down quarterback Brady Downing rolled out to his right, looking for a receiver in the middle of heavy traffic on the right side of the end zone.
