Mariners start fast to corral defending state champion Huskies
Host Oceanside led by impressive efforts from Norton, Kaewthong, Ripley, others

ROCKLAND — Michael Norton Jr. returned the opening kick 73 yards for the first of his four touchdowns as host Oceanside defeated defending state Class D champion Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield 38-14 on Friday night, Sept. 1 in a season-opening high school football game at cool, windy Wasgatt Field.

Oceanside led 14-6 after the first quarter, 20-6 at halftime and 26-14 after three stanzas. The Mariners added 12 points and Huskies 14 in the fourth quarter.

Norton scored on a 74-yard pass play from Titus Kaewthong in the opening quarter to put the Mariners ahead 14-0 before the Huskies got on the board when Kempton Roy scored from two yards.

Norton also added scoring runs of 46 and 58 yards in the contest.

Veterans, newcomers boost Oceanside football surge

...“We try real hard to see what the other team does and scheme ways to get Michael one on one with somebody because I think — and I’ve been his coach since seventh grade — he’s one of the top one, two or three players in (Class C North),” said fifth-year Oceanside head coach Wes Drinkwater.

The Mariners also benefited from the play of several upperclass newcomers to high school football, including senior Titus Kwaethong, a sprinter and former soccer player at the school who started at quarterback.

Kwaethong completed 4 of 11 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown, scored on a 7-yard run and a 58-yard fumble return, kicked two extra points and boomed a 71-yard punt.
