Winslow football tops MDI in rematch
Black Raiders avenge last season's playoff loss.

...“That was crazy. That sets the tone for the season. We’re going to see them again in the playoffs,” Winslow co-captain and linebacker Ryan Fredette said. “We got ready for everything. We knew it would be a battle. We had to be tougher.”

After forcing a Winslow punt from midfield, the Trojans took over at their own 25-yard line with 3:04 to play and down one point. MDI marched to the Winslow 33, but on second down and 10, quarterback Andrew Phelps fell for a four-yard loss. An offsides penalty set MDI in third down and 19, and a pair of incomplete passes ended the threat. Winslow took a knee twice to preserve the win.

“That was hectic. We knew it was going to be a smack mouth game. When you plays those guys, you’ve got to keep yourself in the ballgame,” Winslow coach Mike Siviski said. “You just can’t let them have the ball. The last time we played them, we had the ball a minute and 30 seconds in the third quarter. We tried to avoid that. The defense did a good job.”

Winslow:: rolls over Waterville in Battle of the Bridge

Winslow football rolls over Waterville in Battle of the Bridge
Black Raiders gain 457 yards on ground in win.

...“We had an awesome game. We all blocked great. I’m very proud of every single lineman,” Winslow co-captain Chris Jacques, a two-way lineman, said. “Just hard work and dedication. We needed this one. It was good coming off the loss to Lawrence.”

Each of Winslow’s eight touchdowns came on a play of 20 yards or more. For Waterville, which started the season 2-0 and allowing just seven points combined in those two games, surrendering the big plays was a step backwards.

“We play defense like we have all year in the first quarter, and all of a sudden, come out in the second quarter and it’s like we’ve never played defense before. In the third quarter, we come out and play more defense, and then it goes away again. The lapses in what we’ve been taught to do and focused on all week, that’s got to get fixed,” Waterville coach Matt Gilley said.

Winslow:: scores often in blowout win over Belfast

Postby CM Newspapers » Sun Sep 24, 2017 6:36 am

Winslow football starts fast, scores often in blowout win over Belfast
Fredette, Gagnon lead Black Raiders to victory on homecoming.

...“Last week, we played against a team that wasn’t as good as us and came out, three drives, didn’t score,” senior running back Ryan Fredette said. “We came out ready to play (this time). It was homecoming week, and we wanted the win.”

It showed. Winslow scored on all six of its first-half possessions, overwhelming the Lions en route to a 56-14 victory in mid-80s temperatures at Poulin Field.

“The kids seemed to execute well. Belfast has a lot of flu and stuff like that, so that was our advantage,” Black Raiders coach Mike Siviski said. “We’re pleased with the overall, a lot of people contributed offensively and defensively. Every single person had significant playing time, and that’s good for team morale.”

Turnovers key to Winslow football victory
Black Raiders make most of opportunities in win over Gardiner

...“The last couple weeks it’s gotten away from us, and it’s been about turnovers since the start. Every conversation I’ve had postgame, even our win against Morse, (is about turnovers),” Gardiner coach Joe White said. “It’s kind of haunted us to the point where, we’re just killing drives and opportunities to put points on the board. You’re not going to be able to do that against good teams and expect to come out on top. It’s not going to happen.”

Siviski praised his offensive line, which helped the Black Raiders control the ball and run for 196 yards.

“We’re very proud of the team win. The offensive line did a tremendous job. The plan was to run the ball, and we ran the ball,” Siviski said. “(Tackle) Cameron Winslow and (tight end) Hunter Campbell have been tough on the corner all year.”
