Cony can’t build off fast start in opening loss to Falmouth
Passing game thrives early, but Yachtsmen wear down Rams in second half.

...“We had a lot of momentum in the first half, went up 13-7,” Cony coach B.L. Lippert said. “In the second half, I think we just kind of wore down. … It was great to be competitive for a half, but we have to kind of clean up those mistakes, and I thought we got a little dejected there.”

Quarterback Jack Bryant ran for three touchdowns for Falmouth, and carried 24 times for 123 yards. The trio of Bryant, Riley Reed (nine carries, 107 yards) and Garrett Aube (nine carries, 39 yards) ran 42 times for 269 yards.

“They were a little more physical than maybe I thought on film,” Lippert said. “They looked like they were a pretty decent team, but alive and in color they were pretty physical, and that quarterback is a really talented player.”

Cony:: sinks Brunswick to break into win column

Cony sinks Brunswick to break into win column
Jordan Roddy has big night for Rams with 3 touchdowns.

..Sousa threw three touchdowns, all to Jordan Roddy, and rushed for another as the Rams downed the Dragons 26-14 in a Pine Tree Conference Class B matchup at Alumni Field.

“I like it,” Sousa said of the position he last played in middle school. “I wasn’t a fan of it in middle school. I wasn’t a fan of it this year but they coached me into it.”

The Rams (1-2) never trailed. Sousa found Roddy in the right flat and he eluded tacklers for a 42-yard run. The Cony senior caught seven passes in all for 98 yards and additional scores of 12 and 39 yards in the second half.

“He’s going to get his catches,” Cony coach B.L. Lippert said. “He’s just a dynamic player. There’s not a lot of guys around who can cover him one-on-one. He caught it and made some great runs-after-catch tonight.”

Cony squelches Mt. Blue, 32-8

...It wasn’t an easy flight for the Rams, though. The Cougars stopped Cony several times inside the 20-yard line. But Mt. Blue sputtered on offense due in part to the Rams’ defense.

Of course, when the Rams did throw, they eventually found the end zone despite the Cougars’ rough-and-tumble defense.

“We had a lot penalties, but executed well on offense,” Cony coach B.L. Lippert said. “Up front, I thought we did a nice job against their pass rush.

“We made some holes in the run game and our receivers made some plays with ball in the air. And our defense was tremendous.”

Cony rolls past Mt. Blue to stay in PTC B hunt
Jordan Roddy has big night for Rams.

...Jordan Roddy hauled in 10 catches for 167 yards and a touchdown, Anthony Sousa threw two touchdown passes and ran for another and the Rams dominated Mt. Blue on homecoming at Alumni Field, 32-8.

And yet, in the moments following the game, there weren’t many jubilant shouts and cheers despite the numbers on the scoreboard. The Rams lost a pair of starters in Mike Wozniak and Jacob Mills to ACL tears in the win, and the mood afterward was clearly a somber one.

“It’s kind of a hollow victory,” coach B.L. Lippert said. “To get two (injuries) in the first half to two really impactful, about the best kids you could ever meet in your life, it kind of feels odd.”

The bad news overshadowed a night in which everything else for the Rams went perfectly. Cony moved the ball at will and shut down the Cougars’ run game, holding starting backs Randy Barker and Abram Meader to 46 yards on 21 carries.

Pair of playmaking receivers leads Cony football’s aerial attack
Dutil's emergence alongside standout Roddy gives Rams prolific wideout duo.

...There was a lot to learn, and a ton to get used to. But Sousa could also look to his right and left and see Jordan Roddy and Elijah Dutil, and from the first day of the season back in August, he knew he had a pretty good helping hand in the transition.

“It’s nice to have receivers that can just do whatever in the air,” he said. “They can catch anything and it makes it easier for me to just have them there, to be able to put it there and they’ll adjust to the ball and catch it.”

Pass-catching options dot the Cony roster, from Logan Leadbetter to Ashton Cunningham to Reed Hopkins, but it’s the combination of Dutil and Roddy that has opposing coaches and coordinators scrambling to find answers. They’ve been making an impact in their senior seasons, with Roddy hauling in 34 catches for 410 yards and six touchdowns, Dutil snagging 21 for 260 yards and two touchdowns and both taking turns providing highlights for a Rams offense that has been sharpening by the week.

Late touchdown lifts Cony past Brewer

BREWER, Maine — Senior quarterback Anthony Sousa scored on a 1-yard run with 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter Friday night to lift Cony of Augusta to a 20-14 Class B North football victory over Brewer at Doyle Field.

The win was the third straight for coach B.L. Lippert’s club, now 3-2 on the season. Brewer suffered its second straight loss — both at home — and fell to 2-3.

Cony trailed 14-6 entering the fourth quarter but drove 60 yards in five plays to tie the game on Logan Leadbetter’s 5-yard scoring run and a two-point conversion pass from Sousa to Matthew Wozniak with 6:48 left.

Cony’s defense held Brewer without a first down on its next two possessions, the second stop leading to the Rams taking over at their 45 with 1:56 left.

Cony football easily gets past Hampden
Rams turn to reserves in second half of victory

...“We’re all coming together,” said Sousa, who completed touchdown passes of 39 yards to Elijah Dutil and four to Matthew Wozniak. “We got a lot of new kids in too.”

Sousa rushed for 41 yards on five carries, including a touchdown run of 7 yards. Jordan Roddy added a scoring run of 7 yards while Ashton Cunningham scored on a tackle-breaking run of 15 yards after being initially stopped at the line of scrimmage.

“You want to come out and execute,” Cony coach B.L. Lippert said. “It gives us a chance to see some different guys in different roles maybe in the second quarter. It just shows your competitiveness too. You don’t take anybody lightly.”
