Spruce Phoenix soar past Mt. View Mustangs

...The Phoenix also looked good on paper. Rushing wise, Spruce piled up 306 yards while the Mustangs could muster only five total yards.

“At first, we started out a little slow. It is the first game of the year,” Spruce Mountain coach David Frey said. “We did some things well.

“The line finally got it together and blocked well. Changing things up a little bit from last year, I think they are still learning that.”

For Frey, decision to return from concussion was easy

...Some see the threat of another concussion, or any other injury, looms any time he steps on the field. But Brett Frey sees friends he's been playing football with for a dozen years and a bright future for the Phoenix instead.

"I've played ever since I was 6," he said. "I obviously love the game and I felt like if I didn't play with my seniors — because I've seen in the past people not play their senior years and some people have been kind of upset and I just felt I needed to play. I didn't want to let my teammates down and I felt like I could possibly help them.

"I have a good feeling about this team because we had a lot of players coming back," he added, "and I think we can go pretty far this year."

Spruce Mountain:: holds off Dirigo

Spruce Mountain football holds off Dirigo

...A pair of rushing touchdowns by Logan Smith and Brett Frey in the first half helped Spruce Mountain along, and the Phoenix defense bent but didn't break, stopping three Dirigo red zone attempts to hold on for a 21-12 win over the Cougars at Harlow Park.

Spruce Mountain held a 14-12 lead and Dirigo had driven inside the red zone, but on fourth and 21, Kayle Stewart intercepted Couger freshman quarterback Cole Brown at the 2-yard line. On the previous play, Brett Hunt sacked Brown.

"We hadn't executed as well in the second half (Dirigo switched to 6-man front), like we had in the first half," Spruce Mountain coach David Frey said. "But, those three big stops in the red zone were big. Especially the one at the end."

Frey leads Phoenix past Ramblers

...Frey completed 10 of 16 passes for 126 yards as part of a balanced attack that also picked up 234 yards on the ground while out-gaining the Ramblers, 360-163 in total yardage.

"I think we have (been balanced on offense). I just don't think we've had enough opportunity to show it," Frey said. "Each week, it's getting better and better, and this is the start of it."

"We had a good night," said head coach David Frey, Brett's father. "We installed some passing stuff from last year that I felt we could do. Brett threw really well."

Kayle Stewart led the ground game with 21 carries for 135 yards. Tate Walton had 18 carries for 77 yards.

Spruce Mountain gives Freeport the slip

...“Like I said, their program is up and coming. They did a great job, great coach. I knew they were going to give us a game.”

As the minutes waned in the fourth quarter, the score stood 21-21, with subtle hints of going overtime to settle this battle.

The Phoenix broke the stalemate with excellent passing and perseverance when they got the ball back at the 40-yard line. But a 15-yard penalty was called on Spruce Mountain and the Falcons ended back at the about the 26.

Tate Walton bought the Phoenix some time when he rushed for nine yards to bring his team to the 35.

Zack Toothacker reeled off a 25-yard pass to junior running back Kayle Stewart to place the Phoenix at the Freeport 40.
