Landry, Lewiston light up South Portland

LEWISTON — Hunter Landry was a highlight machine in Lewiston’s 34-21 win over South Portland in Class A football Friday night at Garcelon Field.

“Who knew? I knew he was a great football player, but I was like, ‘Whoa,’” Lewiston senior Garrett Poussard said.

Landry scored three touchdowns — on a 17-yard pass, a 71-yard run and a 50-yard interception return. That interception return was one of three picks by the junior in the season-opener; the two others were hauled in at the goal line.

Lewiston: Blue Devils blitz Vikings

Blue Devils blitz Vikings

..."I think it was all Coach (Spencer) Emerson and his scheme," senior defensive tackle Keegan Voss said. "We had a bunch of different defenses going on. Whatever they came out in, we adjusted and stopped them."

Blitzing frequently, the Blue Devils got defenders into the backfield all night. Defensive linemen such as Voss (who had a sack), Isaiah Teague, Sean Lake and Tom Brochu cleared alleys for linebackers such as Colon, Sean O'Donnell and Jeremy Madore to stop the backs before they could get upfield.

"That was part of our gameplan is not let them get downhill," Nicholas said. "We got some penetration. Our linebackers — Sean O'Donnell from the outside making them cut and not run downhill."

"They were aggressive," Oxford Hills coach Mark Soehren said. "They blitzed and we couldn't pick it up. They made the line of scrimmage one yard deep in our backfield."

That what I thought...198 yards to 145 yards. Yes, two good defenses...but really, two offenses that need to find some swagger!

Lewiston lowers boom on Bangor, 40-7

...The Blue Devils leaned on their running game, which rumbled to 368 yards on the ground in a 40-7 victory over Bangor in a Class A North football matchup at Garcelon Field.

Lewiston's starting QB, Tanner Cortes, was suspended for Friday night's game, so the Blue Devils turned to a former starter, Brock Belanger. The senior didn't have much put on his shoulders, but he got the scoring started for the hosts anyway, turning a bad snap into a 3-yard touchdown pass to Jason Willis on the Blue Devils' (3-1) opening possession.

"Brock's heads up," Lewiston coach Bruce Nicholas said. "He just made a heads-up play, and Willis played pretty smart too, and said 'look, throw it to me, I'm wide open.' Those things happen for you when you're winning games."

That was one of two passing attempts for Belanger, who completed the other one for 14 yards to Davion Jackson. Nicholas instead asked Belanger to hand the ball off, which he did 32 times.

Lewiston:: After position change, O'Donnell enjoys stalking

Sack Exchange: After position change, Lewiston's O'Donnell enjoys stalking quarterbacks

...O'Donnell's move from cornerback, where he started the last two years, to outside linebacker for his senior season is keeping opposing quarterbacks awake late at night and is one of the reasons the Blue Devils are 3-1.

O'Donnell already has six quarterback sacks this year, double the number of his closest pursuers among Class A North leaders. He also ranks third in the league in tackles, leading the Blue Devils in that category with 34.

Not bad for a three-year starter who was used to back-pedaling against receivers who were mostly his size but now has to find a way around offensive linemen who sometimes outweigh him by as much as 100 pounds.

Lewiston defensive coordinator Spencer Emerson made the position change in the offseason, essentially having former-linebacker-now-corner Brock Belanger switch spots with O'Donnell. O'Donnell, who had played defensive back his entire career, admits he didn't immediately embrace the radical shift in roles.
