Edward Little dominates Bangor 44-0 in football opener
BANGOR - Bangor struggled mightily in 2016 on the gridiron, and the Edward Little Red Eddies would not show much mercy in Week 1.

Edward Little shuts down Bangor in season opener

...Senior quarterback Grant Hartley added 110 yards and a touchdown on his 8-of-11 passing effort and also completed four two-point conversion passes to senior wideout Maxx Bell as coach Dave Sterling’s Red Eddes amassed 314 yards of total offense.

“We really have to balance it out because you can’t have one without the other,” said Begos of an EL offense that finished with 203 rushing yards on 34 carries to go with Hartley’s passing output. “Definitely when the pass game’s going, I get going and we just get rolling.”

Bangor, which played without starting quarterback Luke Tuell, who was injured during the Rams’ preseason game against Brewer a week earlier, managed just 56 total yards against an aggressive EL defense.

Edward Little takes down Portland, 24-16

...On 23 carries, Begos wore down a young Portland defense effectively, something Edward Little head coach Dave Sterling said his senior tailback has been working on this year.

“He’s a powerful runner,” Sterling said. “The thing I can’t emphasize enough is that when Caden does drills, he does them slower now, he’s become more effective. He’s a powerful runner and that’s going to help us week-by-week.”

The Eddies and the Broncos both were stopped on their first drives of the game as each team tried to feel out the other; Edward Little with its run-and-pass offense and Portland with its zone-running scheme. The Eddies leaned on Begos for the majority of the carries in the first half, as the senior tallied 52 yards.

Edward Little: 'Bowling ball' Begos adds another dimension

'Bowling ball' Begos adds another dimension to Edward Little offense

AUBURN — Edward Little senior left guard Latrell Thomas can empathize with those unfortunate foes who have to stop running back Caden Begos.

"When you try to tackle him, it's like he's tackling you, he hits so hard. I've tried to tackle him plenty of times, and it hurts," Thomas said.

"He's like a bowling ball rolling downhill," Edward Little coach Dave Sterling said. "He's really a hard man to tackle."

Before they can try to tackle him, defenders need to find him.

At 5-foot-6, 212 pounds, Begos can seemingly vanish in gridiron traffic

Cheverus falls in final seconds to Edward Little

PORTLAND—Cheverus’ football team has made impressive strides in a short time this fall, but the Stags’ quest to take the next step Saturday afternoon at Boulos Stadium ran into a frustrating roadblock in the form of the Edward Little Red Eddies.

In a pivotal early-season contest, the undefeated Red Eddies, who were coming off a win over defending regional champion Portland last week, looked to come to the big city and knock off another perennial contender, while Cheverus hoped to go back over the .500 mark and establish itself as a favorite in a very balanced region.

The game began more like Christmas morning than mid-September, as on three straight drives, Edward Little gave the Stags the gift of a turnover and as a result, Cheverus was able to open up an early lead.

Red Eddies rally from early mistakes, edge Stags, 26-20

PORTLAND — Less than a dozen plays into Saturday's matinee at Cheverus, Edward Little had dug itself a 14-point hole with turnovers on its first two possessions. The game was shaping up to be a carbon copy of blowouts the Red Eddies have suffered at Boulos Stadium in recent years.

The Eddies continued to make the case that this is a different team and a different season, though, right down to their final possession.

Grant Hartley found Maxx Bell on a 46-yard pass, then ran it in from a yard out for the game-winning touchdown with 27 seconds remaining as Edward Little rallied from a 20-7 deficit to defeat Cheverus, 26-20, and improve to 3-0.

"Coming into Cheverus, it seems like we're already down 14-0," Bell said. "We just didn't give up. We still had the focus the whole game."

Edward Little edges Cheverus, 26-20
Grant Hartley's 4-yard run with 27 seconds left lifts the Red Eddies to a come-from-behind win over the Stags.

...“We just kept working,” Sterling said. “Our defense worked its way into the game.”

Less than four minutes into the second quarter, running back Maxx Bell threw a 37-yard scoring pass to a wide-open Terrell Thomas as Edward Little narrowed the gap to 20-14.

“We had that play in our pocket,” Sterling said. “They only saw Maxx do one or two things, and we hoped to catch them looking. We made some really great plays with Maxx.”
