Portland continues surge, upsets Lewiston in semis

LEWISTON—A month ago, the prospect of Portland’s football team playing in a third straight regional final was virtually inconceivable.

Friday evening, at Garcelon Field on the campus of Bates College, the Bulldogs, who started the 2017 season 0-5, continued their dizzying late-season run which some how, some way has them two victories from the most improbable Gold Ball in state annals.

Portland, ranked sixth in Class A North, went to second-seeded Lewiston in a game that began as a defensive struggle, but turned wide open in the second half and the Bulldogs, on both sides of the ball, proved to have the answers.

A punt- and penalty-filled first half appeared destined to go to the break scoreless, but a late interception from senior Vinnie Pasquali set Portland’s offense up in Blue Devils’ territory and with just 30 seconds remaining, senior quarterback Terion Moss found Pasquali for a 7-yard scoring pass and a 7-0 advantage at halftime.

BDN preview: Class A North - No. 6 Portland (4-6) at No. 4 Windham (6-4), 6 p.m. Friday:

These teams battle for the regional title for the fourth consecutive year, with Windham advancing in 2014 and Portland winning in 2015 and 2016. Portland started the season 0-5 but has won four of five games since coach Jim Hartman moved first-team BDN All-Maine basketball player Terion Moss from halfback to quarterback. Windham lost three straight games before defeating Bangor in its regular-season finale, and last week knocked off top-seeded No. 1 Edward Little 21-12 at Auburn. Windham’s losing streak was preceded by a 7-6 win over Portland in Week 4.

... Each team has won a pair of playoff games. Windham (6-4) is coming off a strong effort in “all three phases” in a 21-12 win at No. 1 Edward Little. The Eagles were helped by running back Stuart Salom’s return from injury. A quick slasher, Salom did not play against Portland in the regular season.

Portland (4-6) has won four of its last five games – including a convincing 27-13 semifinal win against No. 2 Lewiston – and quarterback Terion Moss (867 rushing yards, nine TDs) has emerged as arguably the top running threat in the league.

In the first meeting, Portland missed three field goals. Both coaches think special teams – a Windham strength – will be critical in a game likely to go down to the final minutes.

“It usually does with those guys,” Hartman said. “It’s just going to come down to whoever wants it most. These teams are so evenly matched.”

Windham routs Portland in A North football final

...“This is very special, it really is,” said Windham Coach Matt Perkins. “To think what these guys, how they’ve been doubted, and the adversity they’ve gone through … to fight back and do this, it really says a lot about their character.”

Portland, which had won the last two regional championships, finished 4-7.

“It just wasn’t our night,” Portland Coach Jim Hartman said. “We couldn’t catch a break. They wanted it more. It came down to who wanted it more and they wanted it more. We got outcoached and outplayed.”

Windham defeated Portland 7-6 in the regular season when a last-minute field-goal attempt by Portland was ruled no good. This one got away from the Bulldogs quickly, however.

Windham received the kickoff and went 79 yards in just three plays. Bernier carried the ball on each play, going 57 yards on the first play, 16 on the next and the final six for the touchdown. No one is sure how quickly it happened because the clock wasn’t working – the controls froze. No matter, the Eagles had set the tone.
