John Wolfgram returns to Cheverus High football
The former head coach, who retired in 2016, is now in charge of the Stags' defense.

... After being named head coach for the 2016 season, Vance said he often sought advice from Wolfgram and used him as a sounding board in an unofficial capacity. The Stags went 5-5 in Vance’s first season, winning one playoff game before losing to Windham 9-7 in a Class A North semifinal.

“He came to me and asked what I thought about him being the defensive coordinator and I didn’t have to think very long,” Vance said of Wolfgram. “We have a very good working relationship and the mentor and support role has been successful in a lot of places in the league.”

Several former football head coaches have worked as assistant coaches at SMAA schools. Former Thornton Academy head coach Dick Agreste is on Kevin Kezal’s staff at Thornton. Bonny Eagle’s Kevin Cooper employed his father, Pete Cooper, a coaching legend at Lawrence High, for many seasons. At South Portland, former Portland coach Mike Bailey was an assistant for Steve Stinson, who had played for Bailey.

Perfectly said Speed. I have also been a fan on Wolfy's from that same era. Remember a very good Ray Caldwell Mt. Blue Cougar team going into Gardiner in the fall of '80 and knocking off Gardiner and then going on to win the state championship. I believe the following year, Mt. Blue also went into Gardiner for a playoff game and Gardiner winning before going onto win the State championship. Wolfy's Gardiner team ran the wing-t, same offense he carried throughout his career, and Mt. Blue ran Power I. Both teams were very disciplined and well coached. Good to see John back coaching again. Oh...the old PTC, how I miss those days!

Bulldog, the old PTC in 80s was the most enjoyable football I have ever watched at HS level....I was obsessed with the watching of it....

PTC in those days was extremely run oriented....great tailbacks, drive blocks in O line, and great LBs to stuff run...wing T , I , and Power I....run oriented formations...

Tank Violette and Siviski at Winslow
Ray Caldwell at MB
"Old Pete" Cooper at Lawrence
"Wolfy " at Gardiner

Great football , great coaching , nothing fancy, "who's tougher than who ?" football, it was all about execution and hitting, tail backs running low and hard with shoulders square to line of scrimmage, LBs exploding up and into and through them like a grand grenade going off.......it was a " hard day for mother " football....I loved it and will never forget it....
