Marshwood: Glidden, Horton look to lead Hawks back to the top

...A tough end to a tough season.

“That was a disappointing 6-4,” said coach Alex Rotsko before Monday’s practice. “I felt we really played well maybe twice all year.

“We started out and we just didn’t compete. I’m not sure how you teach that. I haven’t had that issue in 20 years and it was tough to deal with, to tell you the truth.”

The preseason returns, in both competitiveness and execution, have been coach-approved. And two of the guys responsible for that are leaders on what should be a good defense, seniors Kyle Glidden and Max Horton.

Foster Football preview: Class B capsules

Outlook: The Hawks lost nearly as many games last year (four) as the previous four seasons combined (seven). Rotsko feels his team’s compete level is higher this year. “So far it’s been night and day,” he said. “I think our guys are working harder at learning our offensive and defensive schemes, and the competition for positions has been great.” ... Springer, a 6-foot, 185-pound running threat, won the starting QB job in the preseason. Glidden, Taran and Bryant will also get carries in the Wing-T. ... The Hawks open Friday at Skowhegan, one of two Class B North teams they will face.

Outlook: Smith, the program’s fifth coach in seven years, has a mission to get Noble back on the winning track. The Knights have not made the playoffs since 2006. ... numbers are up and Friday’s opener at home against Gray-New Gloucester is a winnable game. G-NG went 0-8 last year in Class C. ... Cantin will get the start at QB with Grenier, Lessard and Beersworth in the backfield. ... “We are very excited and hopeful for this game,” Smith said. “The team is coming together more and working hard.”

SJ Football Class B previews:

Cougars setting 'hard edge' under new coach
FARMINGTON — In football, defenders are often asked to "set the edge" to keep ball-carriers from busting big plays. New Mt. Blue coach Nate Quirion set an edge of his own in preseason. "Hard edge," senior two-way lineman Nick Foy said, referring to the Cougars' rallying c...

Class B football preview: There is plenty of parity on PTC B
Messalonskee, Skowhegan look to push Brunswick.

...“I don’t know where everybody got the idea we’re loaded,” Messalonskee head coach Brad Bishop said. “We’ve got a lot of people to replace.”

Bishop’s Eagles enter the season as a favorite, along with three-time defending champion Brunswick, which won the Class B state title last season. The PTC B will play 2017 with eight members, after declining enrollment and a shuffling of the divisional enrollment cutoffs dropped Nokomis and Gardiner to Class C.

“I still think Brunswick’s got it going,” Lawrence head coach John Hersom said.

Brewer football hopes to pick up where it left off; Hampden seeks stability

...Coach Nick Arthers’ club has sent two graduated members of that team — Fitzpatrick Trophy-finalist running back/linebacker Trey Wood (University of Maine) and Gaziano Award-winning lineman Austin Lufkin (Wofford College) — off to pursue Division I college football careers, along with several other players now seeking roster spots at the Division III level.

That doesn’t mean this year’s Brewer team, following the 2015 and 2016 editions that both reached the B North championship game, expects anything less than to contend for yet another deep playoff run.

“This is the first senior class I’ve had here as freshmen so they know what’s expected from them,” said Arthers, the Witches’ fourth-year head coach. “They’ve stepped up and met the challenge in the weight room and in the early practices the kids were really enthusiastic.
