in central maine this upcoming weekend.....

• Lawrence at Cony will be a rematch of one of the best playoff games of last season. In the Pine Tree Conference Class B quarterfinals, Cony trimmed the lead to 27-26, when Jordan Roddy caught a Taylor Heath touchdown pass on the final play of the fourth quarter, then converted the 2-point conversion for the win.

• Messalonskee at Winslow is a matchup of former Class B rivals. They will play at Winslow’s Poulin Field Saturday afternoon.

• Nokomis plays at Mt. Blue. Each team has a new head coach, Jake Rogers at Nokomis and Nate Quirion at Mt. Blue. Rogers and Quirion previously coached together on the staff at Lawrence.

I caught the Kennebunk Westbrook scrimmage on Monday. It was all Rams. In the first 10 plays Kennebunk scored 5 times and then scored on their drive series. That was it for their 1's. Kennebunk had 5 different kids score in that time frame. Bush ran the option very well with Littlefield and Derek Smith running very well. They also have 2 very good receivers in Sullivan and Hickey. Not a whole heck of a drop off with the 2nd group on the second 10 play and drive series. In all I believe the Rams scored 10 times. Westbrook clearly was not the team I have seen the past few years. Coach Gurrette has his work cut out for him. Kennebunk will certainly get a dose of reality when they travel to Scarborough Friday night. It will be a much better test.

Brunswick vs Portland would have been great last year. I think the dragons would have won that one. This year's Dragon team is brand new and should be interesting to see this young team step up.

Trojan football looks sharp in scrimmage

...In one of the team’s first bits of action at Monday morning’s scrimmage against Hampden Academy, some of the same attributes that helped MDI to a Class C North championship in 2016 were on display once again.

No matter who was in the backfield or what the down and distance was, MDI’s rushing attack cut through the Hampden defense with ease. The offensive line beat the Broncos in the trenches. Skilled players broke tackles and made defenders miss en route to a lopsided victory.

“This was definitely a good start for us,” said MDI Head Coach Mark Shields. “We showed a lot of toughness early on in the game, and for the coaching staff, that’s what you want to see — guys going out there and getting right after it.”

When the Bangor and Brewer football teams meet at Cameron Stadium tonight it will mark the 106th meeting on the gridiron between the two schools.

With the Rams in Class A and the Witches in Class B the matchup is simply a tuneup game for both programs. The preseason game got put back on the schedule in 2015. The Witches won in 22-8 in ’15 and last year Brewer won 22-0.

Orono vs Hermon will have a twist to it.
Stearns exhibition vs Camden won't happen so
Orono will play the first half vs Hermon
Stearns will play 2nd half vs Hermon.
Orono has low numbers so this should work well for all involved.
