‘Southern Maine’s team’ UNE

UNE football program set for historic first season

BIDDEFORD — From the moment Mike Lichten was named the first-ever football coach at the University of New England he talked about turning the Nor’easters into southern Maine’s football team.

“Local ties are essential. This is southern Maine’s team. This is going to be tied into that community and they are going to support us, I hope, and we are going to support them. The way you start doing that is by building individual relationships,” Lichten said during his introductory press conference back in February of 2016.

Lichten went right to work after being hired by UNE and has a large group of former Maine high school standouts on the roster. Local football fans will recognize a lot of names including former Biddeford Tigers Joey Curit, Patrick Pearl, Austin Dutremble and Trevor Therrien, Kennebunk’s Pat Saunders, Thornton Academy’s Cam Cadorette and Wells’ Owen Berry.

“In the recruiting process we talked about keeping the best players in Maine in the state and I think we did a really good job of that,” Lichten told the Journal Tribune during UNE’s Media Day on Thursday. “This group has been attentive. They have shown great leadership qualities. They are good football players, they are better students and they are of high moral character and that’s everything we look for in recruiting.”

Actually, both offensive tackles for Colby this year are Kennebunk grads.

UMaine notebook: Former Cheverus running backs are now on opposite sidelines
Joe Fitzpatrick of the Black Bears and Donald Goodrich of New Hampshire are key contributors to their teams.

DURHAM, N.H. — There was one very interested observer at Wildcat Stadium when the University of Maine opened its football season Thursday night at rival New Hampshire.

John Wolfgram, the legendary high school coach who retired in 2016 with over 300 wins and 10 state championships, was there to watch two of his former stars: fifth-year senior running back Donald Goodrich of New Hampshire and redshirt sophomore running back Joe Fitzpatrick of Maine.

Goodrich, from York, won the Fitzpatrick Trophy in 2012 after leading the Stags to the Western Maine final. Fitzpatrick, from North Yarmouth, was a Fitzy finalist and the Maine Gatorade Player of the Year in 2014 after leading the Stags to another Western Maine final.

A couple coaches around town here believe that Nick Archambeault would have a fair chance at making an FCS team or two as a safety and a special team guy and would be an immediate standout at all levels below.
I think he is at Yale which might be a bit out of reach, but he has the "it" factor to the maximum.

No discredit to Greg, he's a hell of an athlete, but this shows you how difficult it is to compete at the next level. The guy starting over him at Endicott must be very talented.
