Record-setting Brewer High thrower set to accept Wofford football scholarship offer

... The Terriers finished the 2016 season ranked 11th nationally in the FCS coaches’ poll.

Wofford head coach Mike Ayers, who has guided his team to seven NCAA Division I tournament appearances during his 29-year tenure with the Terriers, followed up Lufkin’s campus visit by coming to Maine last Friday to check in on Lufkin and meet his parents, Michael and Selina Lufkin.

“That’s when we told him I’d be coming there,” said Austin Lufkin.

The 6-foot-3, 270-pound Lufkin was a dominant player on both sides of the line of scrimmage this past fall as the Brewer football team advanced to the Class B North championship game for the second straight season.

University of New England starts football this fall. The brand new program in Biddeford will have a year of sub-varsity before playing a NCAA schedule.

But players are already committing. Including Hampden Academy wide receiver Tyler Knights.

Two local players heading to Division-III football programs

... Skowhegan quarterback Garrett McSweeney and Brewer running back Garrett Ireland are headed to play at the Division-III level.

Ireland is staying right here at home, playing at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine.

McSweeney is headed to play for Plymouth State in New Hampshire, which is also the alma mater of his Skowhegan head coach Matthew Friedman. He earned a spot on the All-USA Maine second team after his senior season, and added a nod as a Fitzpatrick Award semifinalist as well.

Familiar faces headline UNE football recruits

... “We wanted to make sure that the best players in the state of Maine were on our recruiting board when we began this recruiting cycle last year. I am thrilled about those who will be a part of our inaugural class,” said UNE football head coach Mike Lichten. “They are young men of the highest moral character and integrity as well as tremendous athletes and competitors. The group from Maine has size, speed and they all play the game the right way. I see them melding together well with the rest of the members of our roster for 2017.”

Some of those players include guys like Biddeford quarterback Joey Curit, as well as Biddeford receiver and cornerback Pat Pearl.

Next door neighbor Cam Cadorette will be representing Thornton Academy at UNE, while Kennebunk running back Pat Saunders and Wells quarterback Owen Berry also made the list.
