Hampden Academy fills football and girls soccer coaching posts

HAMPDEN, Maine — Hampden Academy formally filled two major head coaching openings Wednesday evening, less than two weeks before the start of fall sports preseason practices.

Fred Lower was approved as the Broncos’ new varsity football coach by the RSU 22 board of directors while Paul Wellman will serve as head coach of the girls soccer program, according to Hampden Academy athletic administrator Mike Bisson.

Lower replaces Scott Flagg, who guided Hampden’s football team to a 2-6 record in his only season as head coach in 2015.

Hampden football enters new era under Fred Lower

HAMPDEN - For Hampden Academy football, dwelling on last year's 2-6 campaign is only good for motivation. Instead, the future is most prevalent around this team in the preseason. Not only are the broncos hoping to take another step towards a playoff run, but they enter the season with new head coach Fred Lower.

After spending more than two decades as a high school and college assistant in the area, he's finally found a chance to lead at the top. So far, the new energy his staff has brought to the field has the Broncos as excited as ever.

I think Coach Lower will do a good job at Hampden but he needs to be given some time to rebuild the program and get the interest back at all levels. The truth is, the Hampden AD, Mike Bisson, made 2 really bad football coaching hires prior.......and waited WAY TOO long to hire the new coach. Lower was only given a few weeks before the season started up to put his system into place. I think Coach Lower will turn things around, but it will take some time and make no mistake about it, the AD is responsible for the mess the football program has beens.....the declining numbers and lack of interest, etc. Yes, everyone knows Hampden is not a football town, but hiring 3 head coaches in 4 years is just a very poor job by the AD.

duck... sounds like you have an axe to grind with the AD. Without knowing the applicants, how can you make that judgement? There is not a Gabby Price around every corner. It will not be rebuilt overnight and I hope Coach Lower is up to the task. The AD is very approachable and competent. He does have values that he holds dearer than wins and losses, which in the bigger picture will work out well for the Broncos.

Hampden Academy Tabs Fred Lower as new Athletic Director

Hampden Academy officially has a new Athletic Director tonight announcing Fred Lower, their football coach, will take over the A.D. chair. Lower replaces Mike Bisson, who is leaving his post with the Broncos to be Assistant Executive Director with the Maine Principals Association.

Bisson was named Hampden Athletic Director in 2012.

... Lower replaces Mike Bisson, who this spring was named an assistant executive director with the Maine Principals’ Association.

“I can’t say enough about Mike Bisson,” said Lower. “He did an outstanding job in the way things are run, the facilities are fantastic and there’s great community support and administrative support. I’m real excited in that this isn’t building something but it’s going to be maintaining the great things that have been done and are in place and then looking for ways to improve upon them.

“It’s not any major changes but just looking at things and saying, ‘We do this well, how can we do it just a little bit better?’”

One of Lower’s first tasks as athletic administrator will be to fill the school’s now-vacant head football coaching position. The Broncos finished the 2016 season with a 2-6 record.
