Williams hat trick powers MCI to ‘B’ field hockey crown

...York had a couple chances on the same play a few minutes later, but MCI goalkeeper Elspeth Taylor made one stop, hit the ground, got up, and made the other stop.

“We have confidence in her,” Williams said. “She’s phenomenal.

“That’s Elspeth. She’ll put her body in crazy positions to just save it, so she gives it her all, for sure.”

Vivian Duncombe made it 3-0 with 19:15 to play, and the championship started to slip out of the Wildcats’ grasp.

“I think they kept the pressure on,” York coach Barb Marois said. “And we, it kind of just kept snowballing and chiseling into their confidence and I think they just started second guessing.”

MCI ends York’s reign
Addi Williams scores three goals and the Huskies win the state championship after moving up from Class C.

...MCI won the Class C title in 2015 and lost in the state final in 2016, both times against Oak Hill. The Huskies finished 14-3-1, as did the Wildcats, who had a 58-game winning streak snapped earlier this season.

“We definitely know what it feels like to lose,” said Williams. “Last year was a terrible feeling. We felt like we had it all … This year we knew had to play our game. We knew that if we worked together, we were unstoppable.”

And the Huskies were. They put 18 shots on goal, got some huge saves from goalie Elspeth Taylor early and never let up.

CLASS B CHAMPIONSHIP: York’s magic finally runs out in 5-0 loss to MCI

FALMOUTH, Maine -- No school, since field hockey made its debut across the Maine high school landscape back in 1976, had won four straight Class B state championships.

York, and three other schools, Gorham (1982-84), Messalonskee (1990-92), Winslow (2000-02) and Belfast (2004-06), all had won three consecutive titles.

The three-time defending state champion Wildcats did in fact make history on Saturday in its state championship game against Maine Central Institute. It just wasn’t the history they were looking for.

Maine Central Institute, in its first year in Class B, scored one goal in the first half and added four more in the second half en route to a 5-0 victory at Falmouth High School.

It was the first time in the sport’s 41-year high school history in the state that a team had scored five goals in a championship game. Lake Region (1980) and Winslow (2000) have been the only teams to score four
