North field hockey champions seek state titles on Saturday

...Knowing that all your hard work and effort has resulted in the ultimate prize produces a sense of exhilaration that you will never forget.

Skowhegan High School’s Maine Sports Hall of Fame field hockey coach Paula Doughty has certainly enjoyed her 17 state Class A championships, including 14 over the last 16 seasons.

But last year’s 2-1 victory over Massabesic of Waterboro left a sour taste in her mouth and she hopes to avoid a repeat on Saturday when her 16-1 Indians face upstart Westbrook (14-4) in the Class A state title game at Falmouth beginning at noon.

The 2 p.m. game will be the B final between North titlist Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield (13-3-1), which captured the Class C North championship the previous two years, and defending three-time state kingpin York (14-2-1).

...Westbrook, meanwhile, is this year’s tourney Cinderella. The No. 6 seed, the Blue Blazes knocked out No. 11 Bonny Eagle, No. 3 Cheverus and No. 2 Massabesic before holding off No. 4 Biddeford in the regional final.

“I have so many emotions running through my mind right now,” senior midfielder Maddison LeBeau told the Portland Press Herald after the win Tuesday. “It’s so awesome. We’re a family and we earned it.”

Upstart Westbrook facing a dynasty in Class A title game
The Blue Blazes, in the state championship game for the first time since 1980, take on Skowhegan, which is playing in its 17th straight final.

...“Ever since I was in high school, Skowhegan has been the team,” said Theresa Hendrix, Westbrook’s co-head coach. “This is going to be a great experience for our team.”

Westbrook (14-4) is making its first appearance in a state championship game since 1980, when the Blue Blazes defeated Cony, 2-1. Skowhegan (16-1) is making its 23rd appearance since 1991.

But Skowhegan Coach Paula Doughty said none of that matters. “I think anybody can beat you,” she said. “I think you have to go into any type of encounter totally prepared. It’s my job to make sure that happens.”
