York returns to state game with victory over Poland in B South final

...Gone are those seniors, and ended at 58 games earlier this season was the winning streak they helped start.

But, here in the state championship game, once again, are the York Wildcats.

“I’m so happy for them,” York coach Barb Marois said, “because I think there was a lot connected to the seniors that left last year. So when you lose all those, everybody’s like, ‘Oh, I don’t know if you’ll make it back.’ And I’m sure these girls wanted to say, ‘Well, we might. We can do this.’

“I knew they could do it, but you just don’t know how a season’s going to go. And when it’s crunch time and the pressure kind of amps up, you don’t know how they’re going to handle it, but I think they handled it great today. I’m really proud of them.”

York heads to 5th consecutive Class B state title game
The Wildcats top Poland, 3-1, in the South regional championship.

...“I’m so proud of this team,” said Bouchard, who scored the overtime winner in the semifinals. “I knew that we could do it. It’s just so surreal that it’s actually happening.”

Bouchard said the Wildcats were fueled by the doubts this year.

“A lot of people said, ‘They lost all those seniors from last year, let’s see what they can do this year,’ ” she said. “A lot of it is just trying to prove people wrong. We’re still going to be a good team and our coach has led us to a lot of places.”

York punches ticket to 5th straight title game

...“Before the season started I think a lot of people second-guessed us saying, because of the players we lost, we weren’t going to be as great,” Bouchard said. “We had some bumps along the road but I think we are proving we are still a great team and I am very proud of us and how we played today.”

York will now play in its 12th state championship in Barb Marois’ 18 years as head coach of the Wildcats. York is 4-7 in those 11 previous games, winning titles in 2008 (over Nokomis), 2014 (Gardiner), 2015 (Winslow) and 2016 (Belfast).

“I am just happy for these girls,” Marois said. “I think a lot of what has happened in the last few years was affiliated with the senior group that graduated last year. I think these girls are feeling really good about doing it their own way, on their own terms, and accomplishing the same task with new people.”
