SJ Field hockey playoffs, at a glance

Class A

There shouldn't be much in the way of surprises as you glance through the Class A docket this playoff season. Skowhegan and Messalonskee split games in the regular season and are atop the Class A North standings, while Scarborough with one loss and Massabesic with two stand atop the Class A South bracket. Sound familiar?

It should.

The wild card in A North always seems to be Mt. Blue. The Cougars are a solid No. 3 this season, and they do own a win over Messalonskee, but also two losses to the Indians. It takes something special for anyone to solve Skowhegan, and it's especially tough for the teams in the 2-3 positions because they have to battle each other first to reach that final. And while it may seem presumtuous to think the Indians are already into the final, consider this: Their combined scores in three games against two potential semifinal opponents is 18-0.

Edward Little squeaked into the playoffs as the No. 8 seed, and faces the tall task of being Skowhegan's quarterfinal opponent. Mt. Blue will host Bangor in the 3-6 matchup.

Class B

Class C

Freeport primed for postseason breakthrough
The Falcons enter the Class B South playoffs as the No. 4 seed, hoping to reach the semifinals for the first time in 15 years.

...“It’s pretty amazing,” she said at a recent practice. “Last year, we did pretty well. But this year, we have a ton of new freshmen and it’s really been pretty cool to see the team grow. We’ve had a lot of potential for, basically my whole time here, but to really see that and act on it has been really great.”

The Falcons are seeded fourth in Class B South with a 9-4-1 record – their best season in about a decade. Freeport will play No. 5 Lake Region in a quarterfinal at 3 p.m. Tuesday, seeking to advance to a regional semifinal for the first time since 2002, when the Falcons were in Class C.

Freeport moved to Class B in 2013 and has been eliminated in the quarterfinals each year.

“This playoff run is going to be interesting,” said Marcia Wood, who became Freeport’s coach in 2013. “Nobody is untouchable.”

Field Hockey Playoffs: York to host quarterfinal games

...The quest for a fourth straight Class B state championship starts Tuesday for the York High School field hockey team.

The Wildcats saw their 58-game win streak come to an end, but wound up going 11-2-1 and earned the No. 1 seed. They will face No. 8 Fryeburg Academy (5-9) in a Class B South quarterfinal game at 3 p.m.

“I think we compete for (a state title) if we play hard, smart and put everything together,” York coach Barb Marois said after Monday’s practice. “We had a good final few games and I think we’re in a good place. You want to be playing your best at this time of year and I think we’re close to that.”
