Cheverus' rally falls short against Massabesic in early season thriller

PORTLAND—It was a taste of late-October in mid-September and if 60 minutes was any indication, field hockey fans can only hope that the Cheverus Stags and defending Class A South champion Massabesic Mustangs do battle again in the postseason.

Monday afternoon at Shea Field, in a battle of unbeatens in the early going this fall, Cheverus came at Massabesic in waves, but the Mustangs turned to their big-game experience to leave the Stags frustrated.

After Stags junior speedster Sophia Pompeo was stopped on a couple early rushes, Massabesic took a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute, as senior captain Emma Rutledge scored on a rebound.

Cheverus starts fast, ends South Portland's win streak

PORTLAND—If one Pompeo in a Cheverus uniform wasn’t enough to strike fear into the rest of the league, rest assured that the emergence of a second Pompeo will keep opposing coaches up at night.

Like South Portland coach Leslie Dyer, who surely won’t be sleeping much tonight after seeing Stags freshman Lucia Pompeo single-handedly put her team in an insurmountable hole in the first nine minutes of Wednesday’s contest at Shea Field.

Cheverus keeps rolling with win over Falmouth

PORTLAND—Foes of the Cheverus field hockey team are well aware of the danger posed by the Pompeo sisters and University of Maine-bound senior standout Hannah Abbott, but the Stags have even more talent in reserve and one of the squad’s budding stars took center stage Tuesday afternoon at Shea Field in Cheverus’ first-ever countable game against Falmouth.

Junior Bella Booth first made her presence felt on the game’s first goal, setting up freshman Lucia Pompeo off a penalty corner with 6:40 to play in the first half, giving the Stags the only tally they would need.

There would be more, however.

Cheverus clips Thornton Academy
The Stags ride two early goals and strong defense to a 3-1 victory.

...“We worked really well together today and worked on our clearing, getting (the ball) out,” said Cheverus back Olivia Adams.

“Every game we try to stay on our marks, keep (the ball) off our feet, and just try to get it out of there,” added Cheverus back Hannah Abbott.

The Trojans (5-3) got their offense going in the second half, earning six of their 10 corners in the final 30 minutes.

“(Thornton) did get a lot of corners, but I think we played off those corners pretty well,” said Cloutier.

Cheverus rallies to shock Scarborough in OT

PORTLAND—Cheverus’ field hockey team was in desperate need of a victory Thursday afternoon at Shea Field.

But when the Stags fell behind visiting, undefeated Scarborough, 2-0, in the first half, a third straight setback appeared likely.

Cheverus wasn’t about to go quietly, however, and roared back to make history and make the already interesting Class A South standings even tighter.

After Red Storm senior Lauren Topchik twice scored on penalty corners to seemingly put her team in control at halftime, the Stags got a little life with 20:57 remaining, when freshman Lucia Pompeo scored.
