Skowhegan field hockey stymies Mt. Blue
Indians play tough defense all over field to pick up KVAC A win.

...Skowhegan coach Paula Doughty in preseason called this group one of the fastest she’s ever coached, no small statement for a team that has won 17 Class A state championships, including the last two.

“I think we’re very talented this year,” said all-state defender Haley Carter, one of four seniors on the team. “Most of us have been playing Majestix and club teams.”

The Indians got on the board eight minutes into the game when Steeves flipped a rebound off a shot from Alexis Michonski into an open cage to the left of Mt. Blue goalie Erika McArthur (eight saves).

“Julia’s not flashy,” Doughty said. “But Julia’s consistent. She has her stick in the right place.” ... s-mt-blue/

Skowhegan dismisses determined Mt. Blue, 6-0

...The no-nonsense Indians put two goals in the net just two minutes apart in the opening minutes of the first half. By the time halftime rolled around, the quick-and-stealthy Indians were leading 5-0.

“We had plenty of chances. Yes!” Mt. Blue coach Jody Harmon said. “When we attacked the ball and went to the ball, went after it, we were successful.

“And when we hung back and we were flat … we just can’t do that. You can’t play against this team (like that). They are very quick. You gotta attack the ball. You have to go after it and when we did that, we were doing well.”

Fast-and-furious sophomore forward Alexis Michonski was Skowhegan’s point man on offense, scoring three goals for the afternoon.

Skowhegan field hockey cruises to victory over Mt. Blue
Indians snap Cougars' 5-game win streak.

...Since losing 3-0 to the Indians in the second game of the season Mt. Blue had reeled off five straight victories, outscoring its opponents 33-0. That meant little to the Indians, who stormed into the offensive end to open the and pounded away until sophomore Alexis Michonski scored unassisted with four minutes gone. The diminutive forward would go on to score three goals, while junior midfielder Maliea Kelso scored twice and senior Julia Steeves added a goal and an assist.

“This year we’ve tried not to look at the big picture, we’ve tried to look at the pieces,” Skowhegan coach Paula Doughty said. “I tend to set the daily goals for the forwards and the mids and (assistant coach) Tammie (Veinotte) works essentially with the back. Today I think we met a lot of our goals.” ... r-mt-blue/
