Hurtin' Cougars fall to seasoned Eagles

FARMINGTON — Mt. Blue field hockey coach Jody Harmon was forced to play a chess game without all the pieces Thursday.

For openers, a rash of injuries forced the Cougars to take on a more mature Messalonskee team, which went on to beat Mt. Blue 3-1 in a Class A field hockey opener at Caldwell Field on Thursday afternoon.

Harmon was trying fill voids left by key injured players as well as pamper other athletes who were playing hurt. Harmon’s moves on this giant chess board gave the Cougars momentum in the second half.

Smith leads Messalonskee field hockey over Mt. Blue
Senior emerges with 3 goals in season opener.

...The Eagles (1-0) graduated top-level talent a year ago, and coach Kate McLaughlin had no idea it would be Smith who would step into the void left by the departure of Lydia Dexter, who is now playing at the University of Maine.

“She’s grown into that this summer,” McLaughlin said. “She stole that spot this summer and took it as hers. … It was kind of open tryouts throughout the summer and preseason, and she took it and owned it.”

For her part, Smith — a defender and a midfielder during the first three years of her career — wouldn’t entertain comparisons to last year’s Messalonskee team that advanced to the regional finals.
