Scarborough holds off SP in season opener

SCARBOROUGH—South Portland’s field hockey team is legitimate and resurgent, but the opening statement of the 2017 season was made by one of the league’s perennial powerhouses.

The Scarborough Red Storm.

Wednesday evening at the Kippy Mitchell Sports Complex, the Red Riots hoped to begin the year with a statement victory, but Scarborough, despite somewhat tempered expectations this fall, remains a force to be reckoned with and any reports of the Red Storm’s demise have been greatly exaggerated.

After some near-misses in the early going, Scarborough took the lead for good with 1:47 to play before halftime, when senior Rachel Paradis banged home a shot.

Scarborough:: great defense to key win at Westbrook

Scarborough rides early goal, great defense to key win at Westbrook

WESTBROOK—If anyone was foolish enough to believe preseason prognostications that Scarborough’s field hockey team wouldn’t be its usual dominant self, they’re finding out much to their chagrin that the Red Storm remain a juggernaut.

Scarborough’s latest victim was rival Westbrook, which, like the Red Storm, entered Friday afternoon’s contest on its home grass field undefeated and the Blue Blazes were also confident that they could snap a long skid at Scarborough’s expense.

Instead, the Red Storm came out on fire and just 4 minutes, 18 seconds in, took the lead when senior Lucy Malia capped a long run with a perfect cross to classmate Lauren Topchik, who finished for a 1-0 lead.

Scarborough shakes off loss, rallies to edge Kennebunk

...SCARBOROUGH—Less than 48 hours after its first defeat, a painful one at that, Scarborough’s field hockey team was on the wrong end of a 1-0 score at halftime of Saturday afternoon’s contest against dangerous Kennebunk.

But with the prospect of a second straight setback staring them in the face, the Red Storm dug deep, showed their pride and controlled the final 30 minutes en route to a pivotal victory at the Kippy Mitchell Sports Complex.

Scarborough, which let a 2-0 lead slip away in Wednesday’s 3-2, overtime setback at Cheverus, had possession for most of the first half against the Rams, but with 14:32 to go, Kennebunk senior Britney Gregoire found the cage for a 1-0 lead, which held up into the break.
