Start of new era begins for York field hockey

...Gone are more than a third of last year’s team which went undefeated for a third straight season and thus earning its third consecutive Class B state championship; and gone is Lily Posternak, arguably the best player to come through the storied program.

“I’ve had years where I have graduated more seniors than we did last year (eight),” York head coach Barb Marois said. “I said to the girls this morning, every year is a new year and the dynamics of the group is different and the situation is different, and all that is new, but we still have those foundation pieces that will always be what we think about when we talk about field hockey here and what is important to us, which is family and work ethic and staying positive and all those pieces will never change as long as I am here; in that sense there is some consistency still and just the people are different, and that’s OK.”

The Wildcats will enter the season riding a 57-game win streak; the last loss coming to Nokomis in the 2013 Class B state championship game and its last regular season loss was on Oct. 4, 2012 against Lake Region in the penultimate game of the regular season.

Foster's Field Hockey Capsules - Class B

YORK
Outlook: The Class B South Wildcats will take a 54-game win streak into Thursday’s season opener against Class C South foe North Yarmouth Academy. ... York has won three straight Class B state championships, and has advanced to the state title game in eight of the last nine years. ... “We’re working through some things,” Marois said. “We’re always trying to challenge the girls to play at a certain level and I think they like that challenge; that’s what we’re all working towards together.” ... Lilla Reinertson, a freshman and younger sister of sophomore Cassie, is a player to watch. “I really think she can step in and do anything,” Marois said.

Meet the team that hasn’t lost a game since 2013
York High enters the season with a 54-game winning streak and three straight Class B state championships.

...“We don’t speak about it,” said Emlyn Patry, a junior midfielder for the Wildcats – and the first junior captain in Barb Marois’ 18 years as head coach at York.

No, they don’t. Marois, who played in two Olympics as a member of Team USA, doesn’t believe in looking back.

“Once we start a season, we’re focused on that,” she said. “We’re focused on the present and going forward.”

But the Wildcats can’t escape their past. Their 54-game winning streak is tied for the third-longest by a Maine field hockey team, topped only by Dexter (63 games from 2000-03) and Skowhegan (78 from 2010-14). They are quietly aware of what the streak represents.
