Winthrop Edges Dexter in Class C Field Hockey North Semifinal

Spahr leads Winthrop field hockey to Class C North finals
Rambler scores in penalty corners to lift Winthrop to 2-1 double-overtime win over No. 2 Dexter.

... After a lackluster start, the Ramblers stormed out in the second half, racking up nine penalty corners and forcing Dexter’s Megan Peach to make most of her 13 saves in the half.

“We discussed emotion. We discussed heart,” Merrill said. “We really tried to keep it positive at halftime, and so we talked a lot about what we did in practice and what got us to where we were.

“We came out and were the aggressors in the second half. Our heart and senior leadership came through. They really woke up.”

Messalonskee blanks Cony to advance to regional finals
Eagles find way to capitalize on opportunities in Class A North semifinals.

... Messalonskee, awaits the winner of No. 4 Skowhegan at No. 1 Mt. Blue, tentatively slated for Friday afternoon.

“They really protected that goal and that circle well,” Messalonskee coach Katie McLaughlin said. “They made it very hard to penetrate into the circle and get any open shots. They played that really well. Typically, we’ve really peppered the goalie, but we didn’t have that opportunity today. We definitely had to maximize on whatever tiny chance they did give us.”

Messalonskee (14-2-0) managed just six shots on goal over the course of 60 minutes, despite producing the three goals.

St. Dom's toppled Traip in Class C South semifinal

... The kids kept pounding (Traip goalie Nicole Roberts) and putting the ball in the net," Kay said. "Great passing, great shots, it was a total team effort in the first half. I told them before, that's the way to do it, put them away early. I told them before (the game), weather-wise, you never know if you are up after the first half the game can get called. But the weather held out and we were lucky with that."

The game was a total 180-degree turn from the teams' regular season games. The No. 3-seeded Rangers (12-3-1) won the first meeting, 3-1, on Sept. 12 in Kittery. The Saints got revenge nearly a month later on their home field, in a 2-1 victory on Oct. 8.

No. 3 Traip foiled by early barrage

...The game was a total 180-degree turn from the teams' regular season games. The No. 3-seeded Rangers won the first meeting, 3-1, on Sept. 12 in Kittery. The Saints got revenge nearly a month later on their home field, a 2-1 victory on Oct. 8.

"I don't think we expected it at all," Trottier-Braun said of putting five goals up in one half. "Coming into it, we had to put all our effort to play like a team. I think we were spot-on today. Coming into it, I think everybody was a little nervous because it always been close with our teams, with our playoff loss last year. But we all came together to bring out the win."
