After slow start, inspired MCI field hockey team rolls to final
Hughes' speech sparks Huskies to second-half surge, win over Boothbay.

...Message received. MCI looked every bit the region’s top seed after the chewing out, scoring four straight goals to come away with a 6-2 victory over the fifth-seeded Seahawks that sent it back to the North final after last year’s title run.

Vivian Duncombe and Addi Williams both scored a pair of goals for the Huskies (14-2-0), who erased a 2-1 deficit to remain undefeated against Class C competition.

“When we’re working together, no one can stop us,” Williams said. “Our passes are on, our shots are on. … Having won last year, it actually lets us know that we can do it again.”

They normally wait to see who is in the games and determine starting times based on the distance that teams have to travel.

Skowhegan field hockey team stuns Mt. Blue

... It was a back-and-forth affair in the scoreless first half. Cold drizzle began to fall and cold winds whipped across the field as the Indians forced the Cougars to go on the defensive.

“We are just a really, really young team. I play a lot, lot of kids,” Skowhegan coach Paula Doughty said. “Half of them don’t know what they are doing, but you know, they get in there and they just try to do their job five or 10 minutes.

“We have three starting seniors. That’s it, and the little ones just went in and do the best they can,” she said.

Doughty also had kudos for Savage for standing her ground on the penalty stroke.

“Her nerves are amazing,” Doughty said. “Mt. Blue is a wonderful team. Don’t even think they are not. They are. My kids are used to playing in big games. I really had a feeling they would pull it off today.”

Skowhegan field hockey edges Mt. Blue to reach Class A North final
Indians avenge 2 regular season defeats with victory in Farmington

FARMINGTON — Dangle a potential state championship in front of the Skowhegan field hockey team at your own peril.

The Indians, who have won 16 of those trophies in the past 25 years, entered Monday’s Class A North semifinal game as underdogs against top-seeded Mt. Blue. They emerged as 1-0 winners thanks to a goal from sophomore Maliea Kelso and a crucial save from first-year goalie Leah Savage.

Falmouth's title dreams dashed in OT by Massabesic

FALMOUTH—Arguably the finest field hockey team in Falmouth history won’t have an opportunity to play for an elusive regional title Wednesday night.

That’s because Monday evening, the Yachtsmen suffered one of the more painful defeats in their history in a thrilling Class A South semifinal.

Falmouth, the top seed, welcomed No. 5 Massabesic and as it did in a quarterfinal round win over Gorham last week, dominated the early going, but unlike that game, the Yachtsmen weren’t able to take the lead.

The Mustangs then went on top, 1-0, when junior Emma Rutledge battled through the defense and finished with 7:35 to go before halftime.

Class A field hockey: Massabesic knocks off top-seeded Falmouth
The Mustangs win 2-1 in overtime to advance to the regional finals.

... “A little bit of magic, who knows?” Massabesic Coach Michele Martin-Moore said of the turnaround. “That’s a very good team over there, with a lot of seniors, and you could see they wanted it so bad, diving after the ball. But we maintained our composure, played our game and we just outlasted them.”

The Mustangs (12-3-1) advance to Wednesday’s regional finals against No. 2 Marshwood, a 2-0 winner over No. 3 Scarborough earlier Monday.

Falmouth, which outshot Massabesic in regulation by a margin of 13-4 and held a 5-1 advantage in second-half penalty corners, finishes with a 13-3 record.

Yarmouth wins semi at Kennebunk, parties like it’s 2000

KENNEBUNK—Through nine games this autumn, Yarmouth’s field hockey team was seeking it’s identity.

It’s safe to say that the Clippers have found it and it can be described as triumphant.

Monday afternoon, Yarmouth accomplished something that was 16 years in the making and the Clippers aren’t done yet.

Visiting Kennebunk in a Class B South semifinal, which was delayed 72 hours by bad weather, third-ranked Yarmouth came out strong and grabbed a 1-0 lead when junior Sophie McGrath scored with 15:53 to play in the first half.

Strong finish lifts Hawks to Class A South final

It was senior Mallory Nadeau’s poke that converted their 11th corner barely a minute into the second half, and senior midfielder Hannah Costin added the insurance late as the Hawks (14-2) earned their place in the regional final for the second time in three years.

“With this group, you don’t want it to end,” said Marshwood coach Lisa Truesdale. “I’ve had teams before that have been there. This group has seen it and been exposed to it. And they’re so talented; they have the capacity to do anything.”

Massabesic (12-3-1) handed the Hawks one of their losses back on Sept. 13. The time for Wednesday’s game has not been determined.

The Hawks defeat Scarborough 2-0 in a Class A South semifinal.

... “Everyone was diving around,” said Nadeau, a senior forward. “I just don’t think about it, I just go for it. I just dove in. It’s all instinct.”

Marshwood’s defense – which has given up just five goals all season – allowed three shots on goalie Shannon Giblin, with Bachelder and Costin dominating the midfield.

“That’s a great team, they deserved it,” said Scarborough Coach Kerry Mariello. “Between Elaine and Costin, they’re outstanding. They balance the field very well because they’re playing opposite sides of each other. So you try to go up one end and there’s one of them and you try to go up the other end and there’s the other. Then they collapse in the middle whenever we try to go up the middle.
