Cheverus extends its season by blanking SP in prelim

PORTLAND—After a better-than-anyone-expected regular season, Cheverus’ field hockey team wasn’t about to be one-and-done in the postseason.

Saturday afternoon, the seventh-ranked Stags welcomed up-and-coming South Portland, the No. 10 seed, in a Class A South preliminary round playoff contest and as has been the case for two months, Cheverus’ will, desire and ability to make big plays at big times spelled victory.

Play was even much of the first half and the Red Riots had five penalty corners, but couldn’t convert.

Freeport moves on with 3-0 win
The Falcons top Cape Elizabeth in a Class B South prelim and advances to the quarterfinals to face top-seeded York.

... “We just want to make it better,” Freeport Coach Marcia Wood said. “If you make it better than the last time, who knows what you can make it? Just a little bit better than last time is all we can make it.”

It was the Falcons’ third win of the season against the Capers. On Sept. 6, they rolled to a 4-0 win on the artificial turf at Cape Elizabeth. On Oct. 6, Freeport eked out a 2-1 win on the natural grass home field.

“The defense played great,” Wood said. “Cape was all pressure, pressure. Even with all the corners against us, we were able to clear (the ball) out and maintain the shutout.”

Gorham ousts Windham
The Rams strike early and never let up on the way to a 3-0 win in a Class A South prelim.

... “At halftime we said, ‘OK, are we satisfied with it being one to nothing?’ We had nine corners at halftime, and when you don’t score on nine corners in a half, it’s actually a little frustrating,” said Manson-Rioux. “We just tried to light a fire under them and it looked like it worked. I think our girls really picked it up intensity-wise.”

Gorham added its second goal with just over nine minutes remaining when Hallie Thomas converted a penalty stroke – the result of a Windham player’s using her body to make a save in the circle.

“To score on a stroke, and she hadn’t scored yet this season, that really set the tone for the rest of the game,” said Manson-Rioux. “I think it helped us even further to keep up the intensity and not have a letdown.”
