NEWS :
Released by Maine Renegades

MAINE RENEGADES - NEXT LEVEL TO JOIN FORCES IN AAU BASKETBALL

The Maine Renegades and Next Level Athletics, two of Maines largest and most successful AAU programs, have announced that they have merged for this coming spring season.

The Renegades were founded in 2014 by Rick Simonds, long time coach and Director of Athletics at Saint Joseph College, and last spring sponsored 20 teams including the 11th grade "Black" team that featured Matt Fleming, Nick Fiorillo and Wol Maiwen all selected as First team All-State selections this season. Simonds finished with a 466-176 record at St. Joe's and has been inducted into four basketball Hall of Fames. He will oversee all team activities for the Renegades as well as coach in the program.

Zach O'Brien founded the Next Level Athletics program in 2012 after a stellar career at Saint Joseph's College in which he helped lead the Monks to a conference championship and was chosen both first team all-conference and all-state. He ranks in the top ten in numerous categories including the 8th highest scorer in college history with 1533. Following graduation he played professionally in Europe for two seasons.

Next Level sponsored 17 teams last spring with outstanding players from Southern Maine at all levels. O'Brien is known for his skill in individual workouts and player development and will oversee those components as well as all skills and drills sessions for the Renegades. It is the Renegades intent to expand its offerings including multiple camps and clinics for players throughout the year as well as clinics for coaches at all levels. The expectation is to expand both summer and fall options for all players.

Both owners see this merger as a natural fit and great opportunity for basketball players across the state. According to Simonds, "It seemed like a normal progression since Zach and I, and many of the coaches, have connections to Saint Joseph's College and share the same philosophies in regard to providing a complete basketball experience for young boys and girls. I have great respect for Zach and his ability to teach and train young people and look forward to this as a wonderful opportunity."

Zach O'Brien sees it this way, "Through dozens of conversations it was clear that Rick and I shared one common thought: WE CAN DO MORE! With this vision in mind, we are excited to offer a full-service basketball program unlike anything you'll find in Maine. By providing well-coached competitive AAU teams, on-court skill development, certified strength/conditioning/recovery/nutrition and at-home skill and strength workouts, we will drive the development of each and every player. Isn't it time to ask more of your basketball program?

We are very excited about this opportunity and it is our hope to have as many players as possible play with their same teammates and for their same coaches. Tryouts will be held for players, both boys and girls, in grades 4-8 on January 20th at Gorham Middle School with High School tryouts held two weeks later on February 3rd. Exact times will be forthcoming.
