Fitzpatrick's triple-double, Weisser's return lead MGA over Biddeford

PORTLAND—The Maine Girls’ Academy basketball team has put an unaccustomed difficult season behind it and has made great strides in the first three weeks of the new season.

Tuesday evening, the Lions came up with a couple of reasons why the 2018 portion of their schedule could be even more triumphant.

For starters, senior Emily Weisser, who missed most of the last two seasons and the first four games of this year with a recurring knee injury, made her first appearance, giving a promising squad additional ammunition.

If that wasn’t inspirational enough, sophomore Katie Fitzpatrick, in just her fifth game in an MGA uniform, produced a rarity, a triple-double, to help the Lions handle visiting Biddeford to remain undefeated on the season.

Triple-double helps unbeaten Maine Girls’ Academy get fifth win
Katie Fitzpatrick comes off the bench and finishes with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 13 steals as MGA tops Biddeford, 57-34.

...Defense provided the key to the Lions’ success against the Tigers.

“Their press is obviously impressive,” said Biddeford Coach Katie Herbine said. “They’re long. They’re quick and they play as a team and that’s a big thing. They’re obviously very difficult to beat when they play together.”

The Lions used a full-court press to force Biddeford into 29 turnovers.

“They kept us out of an offense,” Herbine said. “They are up and so aggressive that we didn’t do a good job of getting in plays because they’re in your face and they’re denying.”
