Gold Rush Christmas Torunament 12/27 @ Augusta Civic Center

Game 1 8:00am Mt. Ararat Vs Mountain Valley
Game 2 9:30am Winthrop Vs Maranacook
Game 3 11:00am Madison Vs Game 1 Winner
Game 4 12:30pm Medomak Valley vs Game 2 Winner
Game 5 2:00pm Game 3 Winner Vs Game 4 Winner
Game 6 3:30pm Skowhegan Vs Windham
Game 7 5:00pm Boothbay Vs Dexter
Game 8 6:30pm Messalonskee vs Game 6 Winner
Game 9 8:00pm South Portland vs Game 7 Winner
Game 10 9:30pm Game 8 Winner Vs Game 9 Winner

Thoughts on this tournament? What matchup looks interesting, and what potential matchups look interesting? The only thing I don't like about this schedule is that if Skowhegan beats Windham then they would play Messalonskee for a total of three times this season, and could potentially meet a 4th come playoff time.

There has been a schedule change. Messalonskee and South Portland have switched spots, so if Skowhegan does happen to win they will get South Portland.

Plenty of holiday high school hoops at the Expo
There will be 25 games, including Portland vs. Deering regular-season contests, scheduled in the Red Claws Christmas Showcase.

...Tuesday’s action is highlighted by a 4 p.m. boys’ game between defending Class AA South champion South Portland and Biddeford, a Class A team; and a 7 p.m. girls’ game between Portland and Greely.

On Wednesday, Class B Yarmouth will try to upset a quality Class AA Cheverus boys’ team in a 5:30 p.m. exhibition game. At 7, old rivals Class A Falmouth and Class B Cape Elizabeth will play a game that counts in the regular-season standings.

Thursday features two showdowns of city schools in regular-season games. The Portland and Deering girls tip off at 7 p.m., followed by those schools in a boys’ matchup.

The Portland boys also will play at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday against Hollis-Brookline of New Hampshire.

Marshwood girls hold off Clippers

...Before Class A Marshwood (5-0) resumes action on Friday at Class C Traip Academy, the Hawks opened the second annual tournament with a 35-point victory over N.H. Division I Exeter on Wednesday afternoon.

Marshwood returned to the Stone Gymnasium court 90 minutes later and held off a fourth quarter comeback by host Portsmouth for a 44-40 victory. The Hawks outscored the Clippers 18-2 in the third quarter and scored the final four points of the game.

“In a Christmas tournament, playing two quality teams is something we need right now,” Marshwood coach Steve Freeman said. “It’s nice to get everybody involved too and we look at it as an opportunity to get better. Winning and losing wasn’t necessarily what it was all about. But seeing a strong team like Portsmouth will certainly help us down the road.”
