Russell excited for new opportunity at Central

...I’m really excited I think we’re going to go really far this year with him the way he coaches, he’s very into everything very organized with it.” senior Emily Smith said.

But that excitement also comes with a little apprehension.

“I was kinda nervous thinking he was going to be really hard and push us like his boys were. But I think he’s taken things at a good pace, what we’re capable of now and what we will be later,” Smith said.

It’s a unique pairing as Russell comes in with no girls basketball coaching experience and because of that has often looked to his players for guidance early on.

“I ask them a lot of questions about the teams they played, what they did, what they used for press breakers. It’s been good,” Russell said.

Veteran basketball coach excited for debut leading a girls team

...He finds the girls more willing to interact with him after a practice or a game.

“I’ll ask them for their input: What went well, what went wrong, what can we do to get better … the girls aren’t afraid to speak up,” said Russell.

Central is led by senior guard Sydney Allen, a Bangor Daily News All-Maine honorable mention last year, along with her sister, sophomore guard Abigail Allen. The Red Devils’ post presence includes 5-foot-9 forwards Emilee Cohen and Emily Smith and 5-7 Rachael Smith.

“We’re very perimeter-oriented. We’ve got to get the kids inside some more touches. That will be critical,” said Russell.

He has a lot more depth than he had when he was coaching the boys at PCHS last year and is looking for his players to amp up their intensity in practice.
