Two newcomers giving Woodland girls basketball team a post presence

... But this year has been different as two newcomers, 5-foot-11 freshman Emily Curtis and 5-8 transfer Katie Erskine from Calais High School, have given her a productive post presence.

“I’ve been able to move kids back to their guard positions,” said Ripley.

Woodland has had a strong first half, going 8-1 in Class D North and third in the Heal Points standings after dropping down from Class C.

Ripley feels this is the best of her three Woodland teams. In addition to having a good inside game now, she also has depth.

“Last year, we could go six-deep. Now we can eight or nine deep,” said Ripley.

Curtis and Cox are her leading scorers at 12 points per game apiece and Curtis and Erskine have been the top rebounders with 10 each.

Youthful Mariners making waves in Class D North

...“Some nights we’ve had a real good outing and, other nights, we struggle a little but we’re able to pull it together and get it done,” said Shepard.

Shepard has been elated with his team, which has just one senior on its roster.

“They are right where we want them to be,” said Shepard. “They have played together very well. We set the bar a little higher because our freshmen have a lot of talent. And they have responded well.”

His Class D North Mariners have exhibited scoring balance and displayed the resiliency usually reserved for a more veteran team in a 55-51 victory over Class C George Stevens Academy on Jan. 11 during which they rallied from a 17-point halftime deficit.
