Monmouth wears down Richmond
...Tia Day scored 17 points, Hannah Anderson added 13 and Monmouth rolled to its second victory over fellow Mountain Valley Conference and Class C South challenger Richmond, 57-37, at Monmouth Academy.

“This is a great win for us, because Richmond is a good team and they always give us good competition,” said Day, who helped the defending Class C champions improve to 13-1. “I think beating a team like Richmond helps our confidence. We do need to keep our heads and not get overconfident when we get to the tournament.”

The point differential made this game look similar to the team’s first matchup, a 48-33 Monmouth win on Jan. 5, but the Bobcats (10-5) looked poised to hang close after recovering from a slow start and a 13-point deficit to narrow the gap to 28-19 by halftime — a mark that would have been closer if not for three Day free throws with no time remaining on the clock.

SJ And One Basketball Notes:

Playing time

The Monmouth girls’ finished their regular season with a dominating 63-24 win over Mountain Valley on Saturday.

The wide margin allowed the Mustangs (17-1) coach Scott Wing to empty his bench and play 14 players. The downside to that is that it has happened a lot this season. Only three of their games had a final margin of fewer than 20 points, and only two — a 50-47 loss to Boothbay and a 53-48 win over Madison — were decided by fewer than 15 points.
