Calais girls off to 6-0 start with important contests upcoming

...The second half does have some point-worthy games as the Blue Devils play 6-0 Houlton and 6-1 Woodland twice each and also must go to Narraguagus.

Calais has only one senior and two juniors. The rest are freshmen and sophomores.

The Devils start one senior, three sophomores and a freshman.

Sophomore guards Olivia Huckins and Lauren Cook and freshman guard Sophie McVicar, sister of University of Maine guard Maddy McVicar, are the Blue Devils’ leading scorers. They are all in the 12 points-per-game range, according to Clark.

The other starters are senior guard Prue Maxwell and sophomore forward Elizabeth Bitar.

Monmouth girls clip Richmond

...“We played well, but we didn’t shoot the ball well,” said Wing, whose team improved to 7-1 thanks to an excellent performance from Kaeti Butterfield, who led all players with 18 points. “That played a big difference in how long it took the game to open up a little bit.”

Richmond fell to 5-4, partly because it tried too much to play like the defending Class C champions.

“I think we showed in the first half that we can play with them,” coach Mike Ladner said. “We made the mistake in the second half of falling into the trap of trying to run with them. Like I told the girls after the game, we can’t do that. We’re not made to run the whole game. This year, we’re not full-court pressing as much, we’re not looking to push the ball as much. We’re looking to slow it down.”

Freeport girls dig deep, extend streak with win over OOB

...The Falcons took a 39-36 advantage to the fourth quarter, where the Seagulls again drew within one and had a couple opportunities to take the lead, but Freeport didn’t let it happen and senior Jessie Driscoll made a pair of critical shots to give her team some breathing room.

Down the stretch, Smith and senior Allie Goodman both set up teammates with pretty passes and finished on the fastbreak as well and the Falcons went on to a 56-46 victory.

Goodman and Smith both had 16 points as Freeport won its fourth game in a row, improved to 5-1 and in the process, dropped Old Orchard Beach to 4-2.

“It was a gutsy win,” said Falcons coach Mike Hart. “We never quit. We were down two starters and with a shorter bench, the girls came out and played hard. Some kids had great minutes. I’m proud of them. They worked hard today.”

Houlton girls knock off Central in battle of unbeatens

...Bouchard still got her points, as she led all players with 28 points. But what impressed Graham was how well his team responded when Bouchard sat out the equivalent of one full period in the second half due to foul trouble.

Abbie Worthley scored seven points for the Shires, all in the third quarter, while Teagan Ewings and Kristen Graham added six points each.

Sydney Allen poured in 22 points to lead the Red Devils (8-1) and Emilee Cohen added 10.

“The difference in this game was the way my players stepped up when we had to sit Kolleen,” Graham said. “I think Central felt we might fold, so I was really happy to see my players dig down and play with intensity. They showed me a lot of character.”

Narraguagus girls hoping to make another title run

...Heather Thompson’s Knights are having another outstanding season at 9-1 and she thinks her team could be “dangerous” come tournament time.

“We have a good, solid eight to 10 players we can play at any time without losing a lot,” said Thompson. “We have a great bench. We have very talented athletes.”

“The big challenge for us is making sure we keep the chemistry going and keeping everyone on the same page,” added Thompson.

Thompson said this could be one of the best teams they’ve ever had when it comes to scoring balance and depth.
