Local teams eye Gold Ball-Northern edition
( Freeport, GNG)

... In Class B South, Freeport capped its best season since 1991-92 by going 14-4 and earning the No. 3 seed behind defending state champion Gray-New Gloucester and Poland. The Falcons did drop their finale, 52-43, at nemesis Gray-New Gloucester last Thursday. Taylor Rinaldi had 15 points and Jessie Driscoll and Caroline Smith each added 11.

“(Gray-New Gloucester) played hard,” Freeport coach Mike Hart said. “We just didn’t execute down the stretch, and they did a better job executing what they needed to do.”

The Falcons, who earned their highest ranking ever, will battle No. 6 Wells (10-8) in the quarterfinals Tuesday at 10 a.m., at the Portland Exposition Building. Freeport downed the visiting Warriors, 60-41, Feb. 5. The teams have met twice previously in the playoffs, with Wells winning the most recent game, 50-33, in the 2012 Western B preliminary round.

Spruce Mountain shelves Sacopee Valley in C South prelim

...“Offensively, definitely, with the idea getting good shots every possession,” Spruce Mountain coach Zachary Keene said. “If we had an opportunity to play fast, I wanted them to. But if we didn’t get anything out of transition, I wanted to make sure we got into sets and we were able execute something and get organized. We did a good job of that.”

Junior forward Haley Turcotte was tough on the boards and equally devastating on the perimeter, tossing in three 3-pointers and the game-high15 points. She also went 4-for-5 at the charity stripe.

Senior forward and co-captain Hanna St. Pierre was her usual determined self with numerous drives to the basket. She ended up throwing in 11 points.

“I told them after that this is the first time all year I could up and down the lineup and talk about all of them,” Keene said. “Hailee Perkins was great on the boards. Hanna brought great energy. Morgan (Dalton) got us organized. Turcotte did her thing. It was good across the board.”

Media from Thu 2/15....

Houlton eyes Class C North title while Class B race is wide open and SACS, Woodland contend in ‘D

...Deer Isle-Stonington, behind Lily Gray, Katie Hutchinson and Rylee Eaton, cruised through the regular season and would be another legitimate contender.

Class B is wide open with any number of teams vying to capture the regional title.

“There are six or seven teams who could win it,” said Hermon coach Chris Cameron. “There are a lot of good teams.”

“It’s going to be a very, very interesting tournament,” said Mount Desert Island coach Brent Barker. “It will come down to who is playing the best basketball that week.”

The results were topsy-turvy with plenty of examples of low seeds either knocking off higher seeds or taking them down to the wire.

Orono, which was fighting for 11th place and the final tournament preliminary slot, upset John Bapst of Bangor, which was among the top two seeds all season.
