Local teams eye Gold Ball-Northern edition
( Greely, Falmouth)

...On the girls’ side, Greely is once again in a position to make a deep run. The Rangers won their final 12 games to wind up 16-2 and second behind defending regional champion Brunswick in Class A South. Greely closed by handling visiting York (70-45) and Fryeburg Academy (75-25). Anna DeWolfe had 31 points, Camille Clement added 19 and Brooke Obar finished with 13 in the win over the Wildcats. Against the Raiders, DeWolfe had 22 points, Clement 19 and Obar 12.

“The girls have been working hard since day one,” said Greely coach Todd Flaherty. “We’ve played in some close games, experiencing both wins and losses. We feel like we have been steadily improving with our best game (hopefully) yet to be played.”

The Rangers will face No. 7 Leavitt (9-9) Monday at 2:30 in the Class A South quarterfinals at the Portland Exposition Building. The teams don’t play in the regular season, but have squared off four previous times in the tournament. Greely won all four, including a 75-36 romp in last year’s quarterfinal round.

Falmouth comes back to keep season alive
... Grace Soucy scored a game-high 24 points as the Yachtsmen (6-13) advanced to face unbeaten, top-ranked Brunswick in a quarterfinal next Monday night at the Portland Expo.

“All year long we’ve all looked to Grace to be our leader on the floor,” Falmouth Coach Dawn Armandi said. “She’s struggled at times (because) people have been face-guarding her all the time. Tonight it was really great to see her break out.”

Soucy downplayed her contributions.

“I was on tonight and they found me,” she said. “I know all of them trusted me, but it goes with all of our seniors. It could have been anyone on any given night.”

Hampden Academy, Skowhegan girls among favorites in Class A; Oxford Hills is ‘AA’ front-runner
...“Hampden has shown it can play with anyone,” said Messalonskee coach Keith Derosby. “They have had some real big wins and they’ve got the Gilpin girl (Marissa) coming back from injury.”

Senior guard Gilpin was sidelined with a broken thumb for six weeks.

Derosby said Skowhegan is another favorite.

“Hampden and Skowhegan had just about everybody back off last year’s team,” said Derosby.

Hampden Academy and Skowhegan split regular-season games and spent the season atop the Heal Points standings.

Brewer girls playing in first Class A basketball quarterfinal since 2000
...Brewer, 11-7,is the fifth seed while Lawrence, also 11-7, is the fourth seed.

And the Witches will be getting a boost from the return of two injured players, guards Ellie Horr and MacKenzie Dore.

Horr, the team’s point guard, missed seven games with a badly sprained ankle and a bone bruise. She was cleared to return to action last Thursday.

Dore, who filled in at point guard when Horr was sidelined, has missed the last three games with a dislocated kneecap. She got the OK to return on Monday.

Brewer coach Chris Horr, Ellie’s father, said they will give his team a lift although the Witches have played well without them.

Brewer will enter the tourney on a four-game winning streak.

preview: In Class A North girls, it’s anybody’s game
Parity reigns supreme in tough region.

...Welcome to Maine high school basketball’s own Group of Death.

“I believe all of the coaches think the same way. We really believe this is one of those years that it could be anyone one through eight (winning the regional championship),” Skowhegan coach Mike LeBlanc said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a No. 4 against a No. 7 in the finals.”

If that happens, LeBlanc’s Indians would have to be upset in the first round by Nokomis. It’s not just a coach’s natural inclination toward paranoia fueling the belief that this could be anybody’s tournament.
