Skowhegan Girls Draw LeBlanc

SKOWHEGAN, MAINE (WABI)- Skowghegan girls basketball is at the top of the heal point standings in class 'A'. Its been steady growth for this team.

The starting five are all juniors, and they all started last season too.

And for a class 'A' it's a very small team .... just eight players.

Skowhegan girls basketball team adjusting well to shifting expectations
After sneaking up on teams last season, Indians proving ready for role as an A North favorite.

...“I’m pretty sure they’re ready to embrace it,” coach Mike LeBlanc said of the spotlight cast upon his team. “Nothing seems to bother them too much. They’re kind of laid-back, unlike me, I get all riled up. They’re laid-back, and they take things in stride pretty well.”

The spotlight is on his team because of what it did during what, on paper, seemed to be a rebuilding season last year. Despite fielding an entirely sophomore starting lineup, Skowhegan went 14-4, claimed the second seed in A North and went all the way to the regional semifinals before falling to Nokomis. And with state champion Messalonskee and other contenders in Gardiner and Nokomis losing key players, the Indians appeared poised for a big year.

“I feel like all along, people have been saying we’re going to be good, when we get older we’re going to have potential and whatever,” junior forward Annie Cooke said. “It kind of builds up on us and we have to live up to that.”

Hampden girls use late flurry to top Skowhegan
... The Broncos improved to 8-1 and avenged their only loss of the season, 47-38 on Dec. 19, while the Indians fell to 6-2.

Six-foot-3 junior center Bailey Donovan had 16 points and 10 rebounds, both game-highs, during the entertaining affair. Bouchard had 12 points and two steals and senior guard Brooklynn Scott turned in an outstanding all-around game with 12 points, nine rebounds and eight assists while also holding Skowhegan leading scorer Annie Cooke to 10 points.

Alydia Brillant and Sophia Narofsky combined for 11 points and Narofsky grabbed five rebounds while Brillant had two assists and two steals.

Cooke’s 10 points paced the Indians, who received eight points apiece off the bench from Lindsey Warren and Emma Duffy. Alyssa Everett, Sydney Ames and Maria Dunbar chipped in with six points each. Everett also had a team-high six rebounds and she dished out two assists. Sydney Reed had five points, three rebounds and two steals. Warren had three rebounds.

Messalonskee girls too much for Mt. Blue

...Messalonskee’s dominance on the boards and strong transition game were the key factors in the Eagles win. Messalonskee grabbed 49 rebounds to the Cougars’ 32, and by getting out and running, the Eagles were able to beat Mt. Blue’s tough man-to-man defense.

“We’ve had pretty good luck playing man to man all year,” Mt. Blue coach Fred Conlogue said. “They just beat us down the court the whole night, especially in the first half.”

Gabrielle Wener scored 10 of her game-high 24 points in the first quarter, helping the Eagles take an 18-5 lead. Messalonskee’s lead was 35-15 at the half, and Wener scored five points in the first minute of the third quarter to give the Eagles a 40-15 cushion. The Cougars cut Messalonskee’s lead to 42-22 on a Joclyn Daggett 3-pointer midway through the third, but that was as close as Mt. Blue could get.
