Youthful Bangor girls basketball team going through growing pains

...Bangor is 2-8 but four of those losses have been by eight points or less and four of the nine players who have been playing consistent minutes are freshmen.

“I’m not disappointed,” said the 47-year-old Nelson, who had been a longtime assistant coach at Bangor, including many years under former boys head coach Roger Reed. “I feel bad because for as hard as they have worked, they deserve some more wins. We play a tough schedule. We play a lot of good teams with a lot of experienced and talented players. Those teams have go-to players and those players have been able to make shots when they need to.”

Nelson said Bangor’s has been exploited at times by opponents.

“When we’ve been in (close) games, we haven’t been able to make enough plays to pull out the win,” said Nelson. “We haven’t been able to get over the hump. It hasn’t been through a lack of effort. We’ll learn from it.”

Edward Little holds off pesky Lewiston
..“I kind of knew that it was going to be a close game because it’s our rivalry, so everyone’s just hype and stuff,” Red Eddies guard Grace Fontaine said.

Edward Little finally finished its rival off in the final three minutes Friday night, winning 58-47 in Class AA North girls’ basketball.

“I’m really happy with how we grinded out a win,” Red Eddies coach Chris Cifelli said. “And, offensively, thank goodness, we had one of our best night’s shooting. That was really important to come through offensively.”

Portland upends Maine Girls’ Academy
..With the score tied 37-37 and less than a minute remaining, a missed opportunity could cost the Bulldogs the game.

“I’m saying to myself, ‘That’s not what we talked about in the last timeout. Don’t take a jump shot, go to the basket,'” Corcoran recalled. “But then I saw the release and thought, ‘That may go in.'”

It did, giving the Bulldogs the lead once and for all at the Portland Expo. Portland (8-3) held on for the 42-39 victory, handing the Lions (9-1) their first loss of the season.

Motema led the Bulldogs with 13 points, including a layup right in the closing seconds.

“I just trusted myself,” Motema said of her tiebreaking 3-pointer. “That was a tough game, and I’m proud of my team and myself.”
MGA suffers its first loss of the season, as Gemima Motema's tiebreaking 3-pointer with less than a minute remaining lifts Portland to a 42-39 win.

Scarborough girls make Windham seventh straight victim
...Scarborough then cranked up the defense in the second half, holding the Eagles to just seven points in the third period, but it remained a six-point contest, 43-37, heading to the fourth quarter.

There, the Red Storm finally put it away, as they got key contributions from myriad sources, especially sophomore “sixth-man” Julia Freeman, and pulled away to prevail, 64-45.

Blanche led all scorers with 21 points, senior Sophie Glidden added 13, Freeman had a dozen and sophomore Bella Dickinson also finished in double figures with 11 points as Scarborough won its seventh game in a row, improved to 9-3 and in the process, dropped Windham to 6-6.

“We knew in the locker room at halftime that our defense had to be better,” Blanche said. “We couldn’t give them second chance opportunities.”

Scarborough girls make Sanford their latest victim
...The Red Storm rode the excellence of senior captain Sophie Glidden to a 19-11 lead after one quarter and ended the second period on a 9-0 run to make it 32-17 at the break.

Scarborough would eventually stretch its run to 17-0 before leading, 45-21, after three quarters. The Red Storm, getting contributions from just about everyone on the roster, then went on and slammed the door on a 58-30 victory, their eighth in a row.

Scarborough had nine different players score and was led by 19 points from Glidden as it improved to 10-3 and in the process, dropped the Spartans to 3-11.

“We beat them earlier in the season by a lot and if you can jump on a team that you beat solidly the first time, you can put doubt in their mind and I think we did that,” said Red Storm coach Mike Giordano. “I was pleased.”
