Conversations with coaches, refs and watchers have SP #1, Scarborough #2, Gorham #3 and early word is that at least one of the transfers in at PHS is legit. If they learn to play together, could be top #4. EL expected to contend once again. Falmouth & PHS boys/girls double Tuesday at the Expo.

Scarborough girls hold on for key win at Cheverus

PORTLAND—Scarborough’s girls’ basketball team didn’t get off to the fast start it hoped for this winter, but Friday evening at Keegan Gymnasium, the Red Storm earned their first statement victory of the season and as a result, all signs suggest that the best is yet to come.

Facing Cheverus in an entertaining midseason contest, Scarborough rode early 3-point shots from senior Sophie Glidden and junior Josie Couture to a 14-10 lead after one quarter.

The Stags then heated up in the second period, as they capped a 16-2 run with a 3-ball from senior standout Abby Cavallaro to go up by seven, but the Red Storm had the last laugh in the half, scoring the final dozen points, capped by a pair of free throws from sophomore Madison Blanche, to lead, 31-26 at the break.

Late free throws lift Scarborough past Cheverus
The Red Storm survive a fourth-quarter charge by the Stags, pulling out a 50-48 win.
...The Red Storm maintained a five-point lead entering the fourth. Then, Cavallaro scored eight of her 18 points, despite tight coverage by Blanche.

“There’s nothing you can do when you have your hand in her face and she hits her shots,” said Blanche.

But in the end, Scarborough’s balance was too much for the Stags. Blanche led the Red Storm with 12 points, while Josie Couture had 11 and Glidden 10.

“You look at our balance and that’s what makes us so difficult to defend,” said Giordano. “We’ve got so many kids who can score.”

Greely upends Gorham
The Rangers pick up a big win against the two-time defending Class AA state champs, who have lost two straight after a 47-game winning streak.

..Greely, one of the favorites in Class A South, took the lead for good when Anna DeWolfe scored baskets on back-to-back possessions to make it 59-55 with 1:30 left. The Rangers sank seven of eight free throws in the final 38 seconds to close it out against the two-time defending Class AA state champions.

“Everyone stepped up,” said DeWolfe, a junior guard who led all scorers with 26 points. “In big games, everyone needs to step up. It was great.”

Brooke Obar, a sophomore guard, scored 15 of her 18 points during the second half to help Greely overcome a 31-25 deficit. Camille Clement, a freshman guard, had 13 points.

“They have three kids who can shoot the ball really well, so it was a challenge for us to guard that 3-point line,” Gorham Coach Laughn Berthiaume said.

Michelle Rowe, the lone senior in Gorham’s lineup, scored 22 points. MacKenzie Holmes finished with 21 points.
