Scarborough hoops standout to play at Stonehill

Scarborough senior Sophie Glidden, joined by her parents, Amy and Bruce, signs her Commitment Letter Wednesday to attend and play basketball at Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts. Glidden, Scarborough’s 2017 Winter Female Athlete of the Year, said that several schools had interest, but ultimately, Stonehill was her best option.

“I was looking at a lot of Division III schools, but I wanted to play in Division II,” said Glidden, who plans to study Health Sciences. “Stonehill has always been a top choice. Their program is really good. I feel like I can fit in really well there if I work hard. It’s been a dream of mine since the fifth grade to play in college. To do so, feels amazing.”

Two Thornton Academy students are among those to sign national letters of intent.

...Hart, a three-year starter at Thornton, was a first-team all-SMAA pick as a junior and is a two-time league all-defensive pick. She’ll join a program that appears on the rise. Bryant, located in Smithfield, Rhode Island, went 18-14 last season and reached the Northeast Conference championship game for the first time in program history.

“My first time on the Bryant campus I really fell in love with it and felt a connection that I hadn’t felt at any other school,” Hart said.

Hart has played for the Maine Firecrackers – a high-level club team that routinely travels out of state – since the fourth grade. Hart said she felt a strong tournament showing this past spring in Atlanta prompted Bryant to offer a scholarship.
