New England vs Canada Challenge - Great Girl's Basketball

Postby LennyH » Fri May 19, 2017 7:04 am

This weekend bring the 4th year of the New England vs Canada Challenge and while there are tons of highlights for the weekend, including 45 teams from Canada amongst the 215 teams playing, the definite highlight of the tournament will be the Girls Open Division, featuring many of the states best players versus the best field ever from the Canadian side. Here are some of the featured teams.

BNS U17 Canada Games Team - Every four years Canada has an event called the Canada Games an Olympic Style event where teams and individuals from all the Provinces come together to participate in a variety of sports. Most of Canada's future Olympic athletes participate. This team will represent Brunswick/Nova Scotia in the event. They have players from 11 different High Schools on the squad and 3 have been identified for their Olympic program. This is their first in a series of events they will use to prepare for the games.

Quebec Accros and Queens Teams - These teams have "grown" coming here over the past 6 years, as a matter of fact, their Club Director Jeff Dore (English version of his name :-) ) relationship with Maine Hoops is what started the idea for the event. Their fans have been the best each year - excited, yell, noise makers etc..they bring the most enthusiasm to the event you will see! If your in Old Orchard Saturday evening - you will find over 500 of them on the beach in the evening as they have their annual "Beach Party" - trust me, you will hear them from miles away.

Firecrackers 16U and 15U Teams - One of the few In-State appearances and their last one this year will feature these two strong teams as they continue to ready themselves for their July trek through the US representing Maine and the program. The feature game of the weekend will be the 16U's game versus the BNS team on Sunday. The game will be played on the main floor at USM at 1:25, complete with a SHOT CLOCK (yes you read that right) to add a little International Flair to the event.

MBR - Morong - This highly disciplined squad that has participated in many National Level events over the years is also participating. The well coached club gives every team they play fits, based out of the Auburn are the squad has some of the top 11th/12th graders in the area. "Shot Clock Sunday" will give many of these young ladies an idea of what College ball will look like next Fall.

Blue Wave - Bergeron - This teams is made up of current 11th and 12th graders from the Blue Wave program, many All-Conference/State Selections will be out on the floor taking on Canada's best!

There is so much action going on it's hard to follow it all as games will be played on 20 courts each day. We track the games between New England and Canada to determine a winner, their is a Coaches Half-Court shot at half time of games. The event has grown each year in popularity to this year's record number.

A complete schedule can be found at: https://basketball.exposureevents.com/82618/maine-hoops-new-england-vs-canada-challenge/schedule

If your a fan of Basketball, in particular Girl's Hoops, Saturday and Sunday at USM is the place to be.

Seeing that there are more girls teams than boys in this great offering of hoops, it brings to mind that Maine now produces more D1 girls players than boys. Interesting transformation over time.

Great competition on day 1. ACE All-stars were a no show, but Lenny did great getting us another game vs. a talented club (MBC).

MBC over Blue Wave by 20
BNS Canada over Blue Wave by 20, or 30
MBR over MBC by 7 or so

Game of the night (& our season), MBR over BNS Canada, 44-42. BNS can flat out play and were a joy to compete against.
