Maine coaching legend John Donato to be named Orono girls basketball coach

ORONO - Just more than a month after former girls basketball coach Nick Winchester jumped to Hampden Academy, it appears the program has filled its head coaching vacancy. Not only has it filled it, but Orono has done so by bringing in a staple of the Maine high school basketball community.

John Donato to coach Orono girls basketball team
Former Lawrence coach said he still has the energy.

In March, longtime girls basketball coach John Donato left the door open to coach again when he retired after seven years at Lawrence High School. This week, Donato walked through that door, accepting the head girls basketball coaching post at Orono High School.

Donato’s new job is pending school board approval Friday night.

Coaching legend John Donato taking over Orono girls basketball

... The Red Riots went 10-27 in Winchester’s two years at the helm.

“Orono is a program that hasn’t been successful recently so this gives me an opportunity to build a program. It will be a challenge for me to turn it into a successful program. Getting some fresh blood and experience in there might help turn the program around,” said the 70-year-old Donato, who has compiled a 547-219 record at five Maine high schools over 40 years and has 11 regional and five state championships to his credit.

The Red Riots were 5-13 in Class B North this past season and finished 14th in the Heal points standings. They failed to qualify for postseason play. The previous year, they also went 5-13 during the regular season but qualified for a berth in the preliminary round as the 11th seed before losing to sixth seed John Bapst of Bangor 55-40.

They will remain in Class B.

Coaching itch still there
John Donato returns to sidelines with Orono girls basketball team

...Which brings us back to Donato, who now adds Orono to his resume, along with Houlton, Lawrence, Messalonskee, Mount View, and Hall-Dale. The Orono team Donato inherits won just five games last season and missed the tournament. Can he improve the Red Riots’ fortunes? That’s what keeps Donato coming back after all these years.

“The challenge of taking a program and making them a winner,” Donato said. “I’ll keep going as long as I can develop a program and my health is good.”

You can’t coach forever. So make sure you do it as long as you want to.
