15U and 16U hit the road, open play in Deep South Classic on Thursday

The 19th annual Deep South Classic, presented by the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance, opens this weekend. The four day event will be hosted at the Raleigh Convention Center that will feature 20 courts from Thursday, April 20 through Sunday, April 23, 2017.

The 16U Firecrackers (Briggs) will meet Ontario’s Brampton Bounce in game one of the tournament, at 5:45 PM Friday. The complete bracket for 16U can be found here.

15U will tip off against South Carolina Future at 10 PM on Thursday, with the complete schedule to here.

The Deep South Classic brings together many of the nation’s elite prep athletes. In past years, prep superstars such as Courtney Paris, Alana Beard, Erlana Larkins, Candace Parker, Noelle Quinn and Tiffany Jackson have played in the event.

The 2017 event will include age groups 17U-14U. Each age group will include the top travel teams from across the country, featuring the top players. Considerable attention will be focused on the prospects in the Classes of 2018 through 2023. The Deep South Classic also provides college coaches with a tremendous opportunity to scout the up-and-coming youngsters. A series of elite players made their first mark on the national scene at past Deep South Classics, and more will gain fame this spring.

The 16U team lost a heartbreaker to the Carolina Swish in Sudden Death Overtime 46-44. The Swish team with 8 DI players and 3 ESPN Class of 2018 Top 100 players including the number 3 ranked player in nationally in the Class of 2018 were in a battle from start to end with the Ladies from Maine. Great effort that fell one basket short. They play again tonight at 5:45 - You can find a Link to watch the game live through Facebook Go Live on the Firecrackers Face Book page.

Never heard of sudden death overtime in basketball. Is this something new in AAU or something? Good luck to the Firecrackers this season.

Yeah it's pretty common, but at $900 a team you would think different but they are more worried about staying "on schedule" than anything else...I run a lot of events and admittedly, when we are doing "non-tournament" play, we follow a 2:00 OT with a Sudden Death game. However, in Tournament Play it's always time play. Oh well, the team had nothing to hang their heads about, great compete against great competition!

Happy to say they came back tonight and shook off a sluggish start to take on 46-41 victory over the Georgia Pistols. It's early in the season and Coach Briggs takes this time to learn what his team is made of, lot's of positives moving forward. One thing is for certain this team will be playing better 2 months from now than they are right now. Representing Maine in a way all basketball fans can be proud of.
