2017 BDN North region Class D all-tournament basketball teams

... In Class D, Preston did it all in leading the Tigerettes to another regional title. She logged 14 points and four assists and a game-clinching steal and layup in the title game 32-29 win over Southern Aroostook. That followed a 24-point performance against Washburn and a 19-point showing against Ashland.

Greenlaw complemented Preston by scoring in double figures in all three games. She had 11 points vs. Ashland and 10 apiece against Washburn and Southern Aroostook. She also had nine rebounds against Washburn.

Norma and Dale Miller’s Tournament Legacy Continues With Vinalhaven Junior

Many families have basketball tradition that goes back generations. Norma and Dale Miller have more tournament basketball to watch this year.

They have been along for the ride watching nine grandchildren play for Valley… These are the six Miller boys.

Three of them are now coaches.

And there is still a granddaughter playing for a state game… Deja Doughty plays for Vinalhaven. They’ll play Shead at 1:00 tomorrow in Bangor.

Junior center sparks Vinalhaven girls to first-ever state basketball title

BANGOR, Maine — Paige Dennison made an emphatic prediction on Vinalhaven’s first day of practice last November.

“Paige Dennison was like, ‘we’re going to win the gold ball, Sandy,’” Gilleyanne Davis-Oakes said of the proclamation to Vikings coach Sandy Nelson.

Whether by wishful thinking or an acute awareness of her team’s potential, Dennison was proven right on Saturday.

Davis-Oakes used her slippery moves in the lane to score a game-high 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds on Saturday afternoon, leading Vinalhaven to a 55-44 victory over Shead of Eastport in the Class D girls basketball state championship game at the Cross Insurance Center.

w/ video: Best in Class D: Vinalhaven hoists first state gold ball
Island rocks as beloved team takes late ferry boat back across Penobscot Bay to celebrate

... The Vikings (18-4) showcased poise, composure and trailed only once early in the contest as the islanders won their first state crown — and the coveted gold ball — with a 55-44 win over the Tigers.

It was the first state athletic crown in the history of the school.
“It’s just amazing,” said Nelson. “It’s an unbelievable feeling. I’m just so happy for those kids. They’ve worked so hard, not that every team doesn’t, but they have just worked so hard. You’ve got to get off that ferry, drag all that stuff, play Friday night, sleep in a gym and be up ready to play at 8-8:30 in the morning. They don’t complain, they never say ‘This isn’t fair.’ This is our way of life.”

And now their way of life will be a life of being known as the school’s first state champions.

Vinalhaven Vikings take Girls Class D Championship and make history for the island
...Early third quarter saw some sloppy play with three turnovers, but the Vikings bounced back and didn't look back.

"I knew they wouldn't run out of gas," said Nelson. "I was worried at half time, but they brought it back and this is just amazing for the Midcoast."

Junior Gilleyanne Davis-Oakes scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in play helping to lead the team to a win.

Vinalhaven's Deja Doughty added six points, five assists and five rebounds, while Paige Dennison had five assists and Cheyenne Bickford four rebounds with each posting six points apiece. Ashlyn Littlefield added five points, six assists and a steal.
