Rangeley downs Valley in D South quarterfinals
Lakers overcome slow start to topple Cavaliers.

...“We were very nervous at first,” said senior Celia Philbrick, who scored a game-high 12 points. “Once we all calmed down we started doing what we normally do.”

The Lakers won the Class D state championship last season but graduated 6-foot-2 center Blayke Morin, along with guard Maddy Egan.

“It’s definitely different,” Philbrick said. “Everybody had to kind of change roles, a new point guard. We all have to rebound. We don’t have one person we can lean on.”

The Lakers enjoyed a 27-14 rebounding edge, many of those at the offensive end. Natasha Haley grabbed a team-high 10 while Philbrick added seven.

Rangeley fends off Valley in D South quarterfinals

... We had a good game plan. We knew exactly where they were going to be, and we executed it well in the first quarter," Valley coach Paul Belanger said. "We knew if we could hit some 3s and control the rebounds, we'd be right there."

Unfortunately for Valley, that did not happen. Rangeley answered the call in the second quarter, clamping down on defense and forcing six Valley turnovers. Rangeley guard Brooke Egan set the tone, driving to the hoop and sinking four three throws and also dishing the ball to Philbrick and Tasha Haley for layups underneath.

"Brooke came in with a lot of confidence, and she's really grown so much this year. She did a great job handling the ball for us," Deery said.

Forest Hills rallies past Pine Tree Academy
The Tigers use a closing 20-2 run to advance to the Class D South semifinals.

...In the third quarter, Goodman shook off the Tigers’ tight defense, and seemed determined to beat Forest Hills herself. She scored 10 of her 20 points in the third, and her basket with 2:22 left in the quarter gave the Breakers a 29-22 lead.

Forest Hills captain Caitlin Logston said her team never panicked when Pine Tree went on its run.

“I was just thinking we’ve still got it. We’ve been in games and scenarios where we’ve been down,” said Logston, who scored 25 points. “I just say, ‘Hey, come on. Let’s keep playing.’ We’ve all been doing a great job of staying in sync together. So what if we’re down seven points? We’re going to keep scoring.”

Shead girls cruise past Washburn in Class D North semifinal

... “We really take a lot of pride in our defense,” coach Preston said. “We really challenged them and they really stepped up.”

Shead held Washburn to just 12 field goals during the contest while Madison Greenlaw (10 points, nine rebounds) and Cassidy Wilder (nine points, 11 boards) bogged the Beavers down in the post.

“They’re great rebounders,” Holly Preston said. “That’s what wins the game for us”

Forest Hills upsets top-ranked Rangeley in D South semis

... "We knew coming into the game that they like to shoot," Tigers coach Anthony Amero said. "Our scouting showed us they hadn't been hitting their 3s the past few games, so we wanted them to push the ball outside."

Rangeley launched 14 shots from behind the arc with no success.

"We like to shoot, that's our game, and I didn't think we really took any bad shots, they just didn't go in for us," Rangeley coach Heidi Deery said.
