Tia Day drives Monmouth girls basketball into state championship game
Junior point guard hopes to dictate the pace Saturday against Dexter.

... “I’ve known Tia since we did Little Dribblers when we were about third or fourth grade,” fellow junior Abbey Allen said. “She was really talented, I knew that. When we came up we were all looking forward to playing with her.”

Day connected on 51 3-pointers during the season while averaging 12.9 points a game, but her game encompasses much more. She’s also averaged 4.8 steals and 4.7 assists per game while shooting 84 percent from the free throw line, numbers usually attributed to quintessential point guards.

“I’ve been playing point guard for probably my whole basketball career,” Day said. “I like being able to control the play and kind of run the show.”

Day cites her dad Mike, a standout playing at Monmouth in the early 1980’s, as her No. 1 role model.

Allen's impact on Mustangs shouldn't go unnoticed

MONMOUTH — Abbey Allen's earliest memories of one of the state's great high school basketball traditions is her mother, Kelley, showing her the trophy case at her alma mater, Jonesport-Beals.

Allen remembers seeing all of the gold balls, which at the time numbered a dozen, and being in awe. A few years later, she watched her cousin, Garet Beal, the state's Mr. Basketball in 2013 who went on to play for the University of Maine, add another to the display.

On Saturday night, Allen will try to help Monmouth Academy win its first gold ball when the Mustangs take on Dexter in the Class C state championship (7 p.m., Cross Insurance Center in Bangor).

Monmouth girls basketball once again preps for bigger team
Mustangs hope to dictate pace against Dexter in Class C state title game.

... The Tigers held 11 of their opponents this season to fewer than 30 points, five of those under 20. Part of that is due to strong defense and part to controlling the pace.

“I don’t think we’re an up-tempo team,” Grant said. “We want to play at our own pace.”

The Mustangs like to press and utilize their depth and would like nothing better than a fast-paced, high-scoring game.

“We want to go up and down just to make them go a little bit faster,” Wing said. “If we can get the game into the high 40s or 50s it will be to our advantage.”

Balanced Monmouth Academy girls beat Dexter for ‘C’ state crown

BANGOR, Maine — When Scott Wing started as the JV girls basketball coach at Monmouth Academy, he and then head coach Rick Amero decided to start building their program from the bottom up.

“I’m the rec director in town, so we formulated the rec program to our needs and we started them out in kindergarten,” head coach Wing said of what is this season’s junior class.

On Saturday night, some 11 years later, the efforts of the coaches and the hard work of their players came to fruition.

Monmouth Academy demonstrated balance and depth while wearing down Dexter for a 46-37 victory in the Class C girls basketball state championship game at the Cross Insurance Center.

Monmouth grabs hold of Class C girls basketball title
Allen, Day lead Mustangs to Gold Ball victory over Dexter

... “It feels amazing,” Day said, succinctly summing up the mood as the Mustangs celebrated with the Gold Ball in hand and nets draped over their necks.

For head coach Scott Wing, who grew up in Monmouth and has worked all of his adult life at the school, it was an emotional victory.

“Awesome, awesome,” Wing said. “Being a kid who grew up in Monmouth and went to Monmouth Academy and then, except for my first year out of high school, worked their all of my adult life — I’ve been in the Monmouth schools for 40 years. It means a lot.”

Monmouth Academy tops Dexter to capture first state crown

... “I think that’s when we first started settling in, when Abbey hit that first jump shot,” Day said. “We started playing some good defense and then coming back down the court and making shots we know we can make."

Dexter went inside to Peach for back-to-back hoops to start the second quarter. Day, who had tested her range a couple of times in the first quarter, hit her first deep 3-pointer of the game with 5:50 left in the half.

“Early in the game, I think the kids were a little bit nervous, a little bit tentative,” Wing said. “We went with as much defensive pressure on the ball as we needed to
